Gladstone High School Jazz Band wins first at League
Gladstone High's Jazz Band took first place at the Tri-Valley League Festival in February. They hope to qualify for the state jazz competition at their upcoming March 11th competition.
The group also won the Outstanding Trombone Section award. Players in the section include Cynthia Leach, Lauren Hirte, Kellen Hirte, Ben Lau, Noah Morris.
Senior trumpet player and vocalist Emme Grisa was recognized as an outstanding soloist for her singing on the jazz standard Almost Like Being in Love.
In a March 8 competition, the band won first place in sight reading at the Clackamas Community College band competition, earning the highest score out of 16 competing bands from all the different divisions.
"This year in jazz band we decided to focus more on fun and fundamentals and less on winning any trophies," said Band Director Seth Arnold. "The 'vibe' has been much better. Turns out, when kids are having fun they tend to score higher as well. I'm extremely proud of their success!"
This spring, the band will perform at Rotary's Pancake Breakfast at Gladstone High School on Saturday, April 16. The event, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., is a scholarship fundraiser for the Class of 2022. The band performance starts at 10 a.m.
John Wetten students celebrate Everybody Reads Day
At John Wetten Elementary, Everybody Reads Day is a longstanding tradition. This year students and staff celebrated by dressing up like their favorite book characters, and students lined the hallways to read together. Many got free books donated by The Clackamas Bookshelf.
Roaming the school, one could spot Principal Michael Clutter dressed as Gandalf and math intervention specialist Emily Morse dressed as Miss Frizzle. The first grade teachers wore flamboyant taco hats in celebration of Dragons Love Tacos.
Guest readers visited each classroom to share a favorite picture book. Superintendent Bob Stewart shared What Do You Do with an Idea by Kobi Yamada, and then asked fifth graders to share their big ideas. After sharing her book, Kraxberger Principal Heather Bailey got to answer a few fifth graders' questions about middle school.
Following a dramatic reading of Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies, reading intervention specialist Debb Wilkin rolled up her pirate sleeves, straightened her bunny ears and proclaimed, "When I retire, I want to do this full time!'
Gladstone cheerleaders take top honors at Nationals
Gladstone High School's cheerleading team took top honors at USA Spirit Nationals in Anaheim, California on February 25 and 26. Just two weeks before that, they'd won first place in Oregon's 4A state competition.
To celebrate their triumphant return, the team received a police and fire department escort from the Gladstone exit back to their school, where a crowd of students and community members had gathered to cheer for the team.
"We're Gladstone proud," said Coach Shelby Crystal. "Our community showed up for us! This was the best welcome home we could have ever asked for. I can't wait to see what these girls will do next."
