TEDxYouth@Columbus
Don't miss out on CCS's Annual TEDx event! Grades 3-6
What is TED?
He is not a man. “T” stands for Technology. “E” stands for Entertainment. “D” stands for Design. TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. They believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. This underlying philosophy is the driving force behind all of TED’s endeavors, including our TEDxYouth@Columbus event.
What is a TEDx event?
A TEDx event is a day filled with brilliant speakers, thought-provoking interactions and mind-blowing conversations. It is a collection of short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and performances that are focused on a topic, and covers a wide range of subjects within the topic to foster learning, inspiration and wonder – and provoke conversations on that topic. Audience members are encouraged to participate by engaging in dialogue related to the speeches.
What is the 2017 theme of TEDxYouth@Columbus?
This year’s theme is “What if…” CCS Elementary and Middle Schools are full of students who are questioning, wondering, and dissecting the world around them. Let’s challenge these great thinkers to not only ask “What if…” but delve deeper into what makes them go hmmm... Through a combination of personal connections, passions and researched knowledge on their topic they will be challenged to create a TED Talk that will have an impact on individuals around the world. This event is for grades 3-6 only.
Register to be a coach right now!
Being a coach is easier than you think!
- September: Select a motivated group of students. Brainstorm personal passions and "What if..." questions. Watch TEDx talks and discuss the successful qualities of each.
- October: Watch more TED Talks. Guide students in selecting their personal passions and "What if...'' questions to research. Discuss their personal connections to their topics.
- November: Allow students time to delve deeper into their topics through research. Brainstorm interesting ways to catch the audience's attention. Students should begin to write their TED Talks.
- December: Students should complete and record their TED talks. Videos should be submitted to the selection team by December 16, 2016. The videos don't need to be perfect. Not all students need to submit a video.
- January and February: The students will attend two sessions at the Main Library where they will be mentored. During these sessions the TED Talkers will finalize their TED talks, learn public speaking tools and create their slides/props.
- March 8, 2017: Come and enjoy our TEDx event at the Columbus Museum of Art!
How will TEDxYouth@Columbus be organized?
At least 15 students will be selected to speak at the event. One hundred and eighty students will be selected to attend the event. The TED Talkers will be organized into speaking sessions; three in the morning and one after lunch. The sessions will be divided by art performances during which students will engage in conversations related to the talks. Students will be provided with a boxed lunch from CCS and encouraged to continue their dialogue while they eat lunch. This event will be streamed live.
