January 5, 2015....A new semester... A new year...

We are back from Christmas and ready to fight the cold to come to school! This semester will be filled with a lot of learning and fun. We will read new stories, learn new strategies, and perform several science experiments! It is going to be a fun and busy spring semester, and I expect all my students to work hard and stay on track! In a couple of weeks we will begin a new read aloud book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Please feel free to ask your child all about what is happening in our read aloud book!

January 20-23 Newsletter

Baby, it's cold outside!

We have been exploring different weather tools to help us measure the weather. Today we made rain gauges that helped us to measure the amount of rain that poured in Greenville today. We also filled out a chart and made predictions about the temperature inside and outside the school. We have had fun playing and experimenting in class and can't wait for what to look forward to next week!

January 26-30 Newsletter

New Homework Journals!

We are using new homework journals for the rest of the year. Every day, your child will write down what they have for homework. They will take this journal home and use it as a check list while doing their homework. I am hoping that this added responsibility will help prepare them more for third grade!

Reading Non-Fiction!

We have been diving DEEP into learning how to be a GREAT non-fiction reader. Take a look at what we have learned!

Writing with our Non-Fiction Skills

Last week we spent a lot of time reading biographies. The students got to pick out a person and write an informational paragraph about that person. They also drew portraits of their biography person.

Take a look at some of their work!

Biographies

Not only have we been reading and writing about biographies, but we have sat together as a class and read a biography together. We read aloud a biography about Louis Braille. We learned all about how he created a way for blind people to read. He was a very inspirational boy!

This week we will read aloud another biography about Helen Keller. Please ask your children what they are learning about Helen!

Spring Concert

My kids did such a fantastic job in the spring concert! I am so proud of all their hard work.

Fun Field Trip to Paris Mountain!

We had a blast at Paris Mountain! We got to hike to a creek, put on rubber boots, and walk through the creek searching for critters! We used nets to catch the critters in the creek. Then we took what we caught to the lab and looked at the bugs under a microscope. After our adventure at the creek, we took a mile long hike around the lake. We saw a lot of evidence of animal life around the lake. We saw bat houses, beaver dams, and trees that beavers had chewed on. We had so much fun spending the day learning in the great outdoors!
