Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one OR come to my office for one when we were in school!

Emotional Intelligence: Choosing your mood
Being able to choose the mood that's best suited to a situation is one of the skills of emotional intelligence. Choosing the right mood can help you control whatever situation you're in.
Mood + Mindset = Success
Moods can influence how well we do in certain situations, but so can something else: our mindset. What's the difference between a mood and a mindset? Moods are the emotions we feel. A mindset is the thoughts and ideas that go along with that mood.
Mood and mindset go hand in hand because our thoughts can influence our mood. A growth mindset is a belief that most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.
So TRY! It may be hard, it may take a few tries but you can't be successful unless you try!! What will you try this week?

Hey all!
My original goal for this week was to talk about an important term in vaccines: efficacy. There is a lot of misunderstood things about efficacy and the J&J vaccine and I wanted to explore that...and then the news happened. So! efficacy will have to wait while I address the fears of the J&J vaccine and blood clots.
As many of you have heard, the J&J vaccine was paused in distribution due to the EXTREAMLY RARE development of blood clots in females from 18-48 years old. This might sound super scary to you. It might even make you think twice about getting a J&J vaccine when they are available on the market or make you concerned for a loved one who got it/gets it. Well, my goal for today is to play with some numbers that will hopefully help you understand how rare this is and why health experts say the benefit VASTLY outweighs the risk.
How many have developed a blood clot from the J&J vaccine? 8 in the almost 7 million shots. To put that in a percentage, there is a 0.0000114% chance you would get a blood clot from the J&J vaccine. Even if a 1000% more people got a blood clot from the vaccine, we are still talking about less than 0.001% of the population.
Keep in mind this is only people who have gotten a blood clot, not who have died. As of this post only one person has died from blood clot related complications. Let's put that into perspective. How many people, in the US (just to keep this "local") have died from COVID-19 in the last week: around 750 PER DAY! just comparing the vaccine dangers to COVID dangers, this is easily a better bet than going unvaccinated.
But what about other vaccines? aren't they safer? should I hold out for another one? Well let's put this into perspective. The odds of getting a clot are incredibly low. Just for context, here are some things what are more likely going to give you a blood clot: with birth control, around 1 in 1,000 (0.001%) females develop a clot. When giving birth 65 in 10,000 (0.0065%) women develop a clot afterwards. I should note the why clot develop are different in every case. That said, these two things are done EVERY DAY and are significantly more likely to give you a blood clot.
I know it is scary to hear things like blood clots and death on the news. Often this is because the news can present things in a scary way. To make a point, today's video goes into all the ways we can die that are SIGNIFFICANTLY more likely to kill you than the J&J vaccine. I don't do this to scare you. My point is, if eating food doesn't scare you (1 in 2,696 die per year due to chocking on food), then the J&J vaccine should not cause you fear.
