Blog: Do as I say, not as I do?
As I was pondering all of this, Governor Christie made the news. If you aren't familiar with the story, here is a quick rundown. Governor Christie, amid a budget battle, ordered all public parks lands closed. Despite that closure, Governor Christie vacationed on one of the closed beaches and was subsequently photographed on said beach. His response when grilled about why the beach was closed to the general public but not him: "I am sorry they are not the governor." As you might have guessed, the adults impacted by this double standard were quite heated, and by the sound of his continued comments, I am not sure Governor Christie sees the problem. Much like my parenting.....sometimes.
So what does this rambling have to do with us. It turns out we are great at setting a double standard and then rationalizing the heck out of it. Patrick Lencioni calls this the fundamental attribution error. While he is not talking about double standards, he is talking about behaviors that we tolerate for ourselves but not others. The fundamental attribution error, according to Lencioni, is:
"the tendency of human beings to attribute negative or frustrating behaviors of others to their intentions or personalities, while attributing their own negative or frustrating behaviors to environmental factors."
We rationalize our own behaviors and criticize the behavior of others. We cut someone off and say we had to because of the rush we are in. We then get cut off and call that person an idiot and wonder who taught them to drive. We see someone yelling at their kid in the grocery store and assume that have anger problems and need counseling. We do the same, and it is because of the behavior of our own kids. We rationalize our own behavior and define others negatively by that same behavior.
How much do we do this in education? What do we expect of our kids that we don't expect of ourselves? What behaviors are okay for staff but not okay for kids? If there are exceptions, why? Interesting discussion to have......
What have you been doing to relax or recharge?
Flashes,
What have you been up to??!?!?! We want to know. Send a picture to Rob of something exciting, fun, or relaxing you did this summer! A picture with you in the picture is preferred. On opening day we want to share with other Flashes what everyone has been up to during our relaxing family or alone time.
Doughnuts with dad became a weekly affair, “Hands off my doughnut daddy!”

Farley Family
I know this is a long shot, but I thought I would ask. If you didn't already know, Cheryl Farley (mom to Peyton, Aaron, Madison & Allison) has been diagnosed with ALS. I don't know how much you know about ALS, but it's awful. She is already struggling with fine motor skills in her hands, and cooking is becoming very difficult. Kristy Donley-Nystrom, the foreign language dept chair at FCHS, has organized an online meal train for the family. Will you please consider forwarding this to the staff at your schools? I know all four Farley kids have gone and will go through both schools.
