Fabulous Fourth Grade

September 25, 2015

This week

This week has flown by. Students took part in DRA testing (which I will explain further at conferences.) It is a more accurate way of accessing students' reading levels which also takes their writing into account. This took me out of the classroom one full day this week so I could pull each student to test them. They read aloud while I take notes on their fluency, mistakes, miscues, etc. They then make predictions. They read the text, summarize it and answer more questions. The goal is to find the exact point where their individual reading level and instructional reading level meet. It is a process, and we are now getting the hang of it! It will be GREAT data to have and will show us exactly what skills each student needs to improve upon. It is just a process, especially the first time for the whole school to do this.

Our word-a-day words for next week are: thaw, symphony, spontaneous and rickety.

Your child should be above 50% of their AR goal at this point in the quarter. Check in with them to see how they are doing.

Math Facts take 2 (This is the same video I posted last week... )

Here is why I am so passionate about students knowing their math facts forward and backward. This is a series of short YouTube clips. The man speaking is with Reflex Math, the program the kids use.

Seesaw - Online Portfolios - Take 2. If you have not signed up for this, it's not too late!

I am more than excited to try this new online portfolio called Seesaw. Your child came home today with a parent letter. The kids will upload work into Seesaw and you will be able to look at it, comment, and talk to them about it. I even had them upload their spelling test result today, so you can see that report.

The settings are currently set that the kids can ONLY see their own work. You can ONLY see your child's work. So, get on Seesaw, take a look around, and enjoy how hard your child is working!
