January Scoop
News from Room 5
Focus Areas for this Month
•Math: We will continue to focus on double and triple digit regrouping. Adding money will also be incorporated. Continue to practice time and consider an analog watch for you child to practice this skill (holiday gift?).
•Writing: Practice friendly letter writing and we will continue our pen pal writing with Mrs. Hishmeh's class. Students have been writing to their pen pals since September. We will also begin meeting with Mrs. Bartosiewciz's 3rd grade class for peer editing.
•Social Studies: Our 2nd grade team will begin a "Heroes" rotation. Each teacher will focus on a particular individual who has made a difference in the lives of many people. These heroes would include presidents, scientists, authors, social movement leaders,...
Your child will visit each teacher from the grade level to get an overview of several heroes.
•Cooking/Gardening: Students are making an Italian apple/prune puff pastry dessert with Mrs. Shannon & Mrs. Ramos. We will begin doing some planting with Mr. & Mrs. Phillips in the garden. It's time to get our winter garden started! We have hired a garden coordinator and she is in the process of organizing our garden plots so we can coordinate with the SV school lunch program.
December Events
Week of December 3rd: Heroes. We've been studying community heroes. Who is one of your real life heroes and what makes them a hero to you?
Week of December 10th: Favorite block on the Pyramid of Success. We have read and talked about Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and the 14 different blocks. Choose one of your favorite blocks (i.e. friendship, loyalty, hard work, self-control, etc.) and give us three detailed examples of how you can demonstrate that block of the pyramid.
Week of December 17th: Free choice. You can choose any topic but tell us why you chose it and three things you want us to know. (Remember, no toys or electronics but you can bring a photo or a draw a picture to share information with us.)
Please Note: The caroling is an optional, not a school sponsored event. This is our way of giving back to the community and putting some holiday cheer in the lives of our seniors. Details of the meeting place were sent home last week.
