3rd Grade Newsletter

September 8th - 11th

Happy September!

Dear Parents,

We had another wonderful week in 3rd grade! We established reading goals, used our senses to journal about a favorite place, visited the library, discussed habits of mind that help us become better learners, explored scientific tools and technology.... just to name a few!

We appreciate your support in helping your child get adjusted to our routines this year, and for encouraging them to start charting completed books on their reading log at home.

A few general announcements:

1. Battle of the Books permission forms and information were sent home recently. Should your child wish to participate, permission forms are due back to your child's homeroom teacher by Friday, September 11th.

2. During the week of September 8th, your child will not have spelling words to study or a spelling test. This is due to the fact that we have a short week because of the Labor Day holiday.

3. If you are planning to attend the Watchdog Dads Pizza Party on September 15th, please RSVP by filling out the bright yellow slip of paper sent home in your child's folder and return to your child's homeroom teacher.

4. Math homework will start on Tuesday! We will also be starting Module 1 in Stepping Stones. Parents can look for more information about what students will be learning in this module coming home from your child's teacher.

We are so excited for another great week at Beck! As always, please contact us any time with questions.

The Third Grade Team

Learning Targets

A Learning Target is the desired goal of each task in which your child will actively be involved. In addition, it engages your child in reflective evaluation of their own performance.

Readers Workshop:

We will use text clues to identify the genre of our independent reading text, and create products to prove our conclusions. We will participate in shared readings and practice our fluency. We will begin to explore the parts of a full-length reader's response.

Writers Workshop:

We will continue our exploration on the habits of good writers. We will discuss and create descriptions and details to hook our readers. We will learn how authors expand a moment and practice expanding a "seed idea."

Social Studies:

We will identify various locations and characteristics of maps/globes. We will use cardinal and intermediate directions to find and place locations on a map.

Math Workshop:

We will write and represent four digit numbers so that we understand the value of the number. I will know I have it when I correctly record the value of the number on the numeral expander.

We will demonstrate the steps of the scientific method so that we can carry out an inquiry investigation. I'll know I've got it when I can successfully identify the scientific method steps in an investigation.

Our campus goal is 98% attendance every day. We appreciate your support in helping us reach this goal by scheduling doctor's appointments, vacations, and other activities outside of the regular school day. If your child is sick we certainly understand and encourage you to keep them home for the day. Please send a note or email beckelem@nisdtx.org if you child will be out sick. Thank you!!

Speeding to Read

This year Beck has been invited to participate in Texas Motor Speedway's SPEEDING TO READ program. We will be competing against 7 other schools in the area to see who can read the most books!! There will be 4 "turns," around the racetrack, or checkpoints in which student totals will be calculated and prizes/medals will be distributed to students who are in the lead.

There will be a kick-off assembly at Texas Motor Speedway on September 29th (we will send more information home about this trip soon). For more information about the program, please visit the website at http://www.speedingtoread.com/

This week your child will receive their Speeding to Read log. Using this log, students can record the books they have finished reading. Any book read at home or in class counts towards meeting their goal! Please make sure that your child records the title of the book in the correct category (picture book, chapter book, graphic novel, or NASCAR book). Categorizing these books helps us to calculate how many "stickers" your child will earn for our tracking chart at school.

Please contact your child's language arts teacher if you have any questions about this program!
