Schools go after Social Media Platforms
Several school districts and Bucks County in Pennsylvania are suing social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and Meta, alleging that they contribute to mental health issues in young people and are intentionally designed to “exploit for profit”. The plaintiffs want social media companies to pay damages to fund mental health initiatives and change the way their platforms operate to reduce harm to young people.
Seattle and San Mateo County school systems are also suing several social media companies, blaming them for distracted students, cyberbullying, and other negative impacts on young people. There has been a push to hold social media companies accountable for what people do on their platforms, with recent lawsuits challenging Section 230, which protects website operators from liability for what users post or comment.
Experts have questioned whether platforms can truly be held accountable and whether hitting them in the pocketbook will force them to change. Companies have introduced safety features, but some, like screen limits, can be easily skirted by teens.

Nothing of note, so just a reminder that if you receive a suspicious email that appears to come from someone you know, you may be tempted to reply to the email to learn more. However, if you reply to the email, you may increase the security risk. If an email account has been compromised, the person who replies back to you probably won’t be who you expect. You could actually be communicating with a cybercriminal.
