FOURTH GRADERS BUILD CIRCUITS
Fourth grade science classes at West Sand Lake Elementary School have been working on an energy unit. Students built series and parallel circuits with Miss Nizinkirck!
APHS ROBOTICS CLUB COMPETES
Five teams from the Averill Park High School Robotics Club participated in an unofficial competition at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute campus!
KEY CLUB RAISES MONEY FOR CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
The Averill Park High School Key Club and Sand Lake Kiwanis visited Crossgates Mall and sold Bells of Life. The group raised more than $1,500 with proceeds going to Albany Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital!
MRS. SCHEEREN RETIRES AFTER 18 YEARS OF SERVICE

MHSL K-KIDS VOLUNTEER WITH SAND LAKE KIWANIS
The Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary K-Kids volunteered at the monthly Sand Lake Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner on Dec. 14 at the West Sand Lake Fire Hall. The K-Kids worked very hard and their duties included rolling silverware, taking food and drink orders, serving, and clearing tables. Thank you for your volunteerism!
S.A.G.E.S. VISITS VAN RENSSELAER
S.A.G.E.S. visited Van Rensselaer Manor and brought gifts for the residents! Students completed projects to raise money to purchase gifts, and the amazing staff and parents from APHS donated items to help fill the bags. Students spent time playing games and chatting with residents before surprising them with a gift to make their holidays just a little better.
HORTICULTURE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT SEEDS, PLANTS
APHS students are learning the importance of seed saving, they are separating seeds from the plants and storing them until the spring, so they can plant them. Horticulture students also planted lettuce and have been taking care of it through the fall. Read more here.
ROY WAJDA, MAX HEADLEY PERFORM AT EMPIRE STATE PLAZA
Sixth grade baritone players, Roy Wajda and Max Headley, participated in their first Tuba Christmas (tubachristmas.com) at the Empire State Plaza Tree Lighting!
THEO HART WINS WSL SPELLING BEE
West Sand Lake Elementary School fifth grader, Theo Hart, spelled his way to first place in the WSL Fourth/Fifth Grade Spelling Bee! Theo will represent WSL in the 2020 Capital Region Spelling Bee on Feb. 4, 2020. Honorable mention goes out to WSL fifth graders: Landgon Slagen, Olivia Jubrey and Carson Ferriero, who were in the final four.
GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKED NO. 1
The varsity girls basketball team has been ranked as high as No. 1 in Class A in New York state by the NYSSWA this season.
STUDENTS, STAFF GREETED BY MUSICAL PERFORMANCE
Instrumental students at the high school greeted students and staff with holiday cheer as they came into school on Dec. 19!
PES HOLDS 'COME BOWL WITH ME'
Poestenkill Elementary School held its annual Come Bowl With Me event recently. This is a wonderful tradition at the school
FOURTH GRADERS CREATE FALSE FACE MASKS
PES students in Mrs. Eagan's fourth grade class made False Face Masks to conclude the Social Studies unit on Native Americans! Students really enjoyed this project and produced some great masks.
WSL MUSICIANS PERFORM THROUGHOUT SCHOOL
West Sand Lake Elementary School music teacher, Mr. Riccomini, toured the school with his 5th grade musicians. Elementary classrooms enjoyed quintets, quartets, trios, duets and soloists sharing holiday songs.
KINDERGARTEN PREPARED FOR THE HOLIDAYS AT PES
Kindergarten held a holiday party at Poestenkill Elementary School where students worked on holiday centers and created some awesome crafts and gingerbread houses!
APHS TOURS UNITED NATIONS, 9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM
42 APHS students, along with Mr. Smith, Mr. Colbert, Mr. Goodnow, Mrs. Apelanz & Mrs. Yost, toured the United Nations in NYC. Students were fortunate to see diplomats in session, actually voting on human rights issues. The afternoon was spent at the 911 Memorial Museum, where students learned about one of the most tragic events in US history. It was a very moving experience.
BOYS BASKETBALL READS AT MHSL
The boys varsity basketball team did a great job reading with Mrs. Pugliese's first graders at Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary School!
PES, AMS ORCHESTRA JOIN TOGETHER IN SING ALONG
Mrs. Matheke led Poestenkill Elementary students and faculty in a sing along of seasonal favorites. Mrs. Barotto and the Algonquin Middle School orchestra students joined this year, too!
MAKING SNOW USING MATH RATIOS
Mrs. Willis and Algonquin Middle School students made snow in math using ratios the week before the holiday break!
GIRLS BASKETBALL HELPS OUT AT YOUTH CAMP
Each week Coach Keegan and members of the Averill Park Girls Basketball program work with the Averill Park Youth Basketball Program at their Saturday morning hoop camp!
APCSD GRADUATES RETURN, SHARE ENGINEERING WISDOM
The APHS Engineering Design and Development Class had visitors that were graduates who completed the same course work students are currently working on. These graduates came to share words of wisdom about their college experience.
SPANISH 5, SAGES SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER
In what has become an anticipated tradition, Spanish 5 classes and SAGES students brought cheer to the school with their Spanish Christmas carols before the winter break.
DEPUTY NIKLES PRESENTS ON INTERNET SAFETY
Deputy Nikles spoke with 6th grade TEAM students about internet safety and making strong passwords and safe usernames. We are fortunate to have him as a resource in the Averill Park Central School District.
STUDENTS CREATE, SEND PACKAGES TO SOLDIERS OVERSEAS
West Sand Lake Elementary first grade students from Mrs. Zalucky’s classroom, and their families, created holiday care packages to send to Afghanistan to support a former Averill Park CSD graduate, Matt Schumaker, class of 2017. Read more here.
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN LEGO FORM
Algonquin Middle School students in Mrs. Celeste’s class used Legos to depict some of the causes of the American Revolution.
WRESTLING EARNS HONORABLE MENTION IN STATE RANKINGS
The first NYSSWA rankings of the year are out for varsity wrestling and Averill Park is listed as an honorable mention! Way to go team!

GIRLS INDOOR TRACK BREAKS 2 SCHOOL RECORDS
Two school records were broken at the indoor track Frank Demasi Utica Invitational. The Girls 4x800m relay team of Kim Mazzacco, Mary Bryant, Maddy Gile and Gabby Skiba ran 10:27.78 to break the school record by almost 8 seconds! The Girls 4x200m relay ran 1:51.28. Marissa Mazzacco, Lydia Munandi, Abby Wicks and Lydia Ware broke an 18-year-old school record.
BOYS BASKETBALL, STUDENT GOV'T TEAM UP
Please join AP Student Government and the Boys Basketball team in "Spreading Will Power" on Friday, Jan. 31 during the day and wrapping up with the boys game that evening. Read more here.

REGENTS EXAMS JAN. 21-24

An active parenting workshop will be held on Tuesdays from Jan. 28-Feb. 25. For more information, view the flyer to the left.
COUNSELING CENTER WORKS WITH NAVIANCE
The Counseling Center has assigned the Strengths Explorer Task in Naviance to all 9th graders. We are asking students to complete the task by February 15th. This task will allow students to find out about their core strengths, which will then help them to determine different career pathways. The counselors are encouraging all students to utilize Naviance to help them become more college and career ready. If your student forgot their password, please have them see their School Counselor.
