NEWSWORTHY ODDS AND ENDS

The first day of school is Tuesday, September 3rd.

Bell Times for Start of the School Day

All students in Grades 7/8 should be on the blacktop/playground area by the 7:45 a.m. bell. Students must be in their classroom seats by the 7:50 a.m. bell.

Students in Grades K-6 should be on the blacktop/playground area by the 7:45 a.m. bell. Students are to be in their classroom seats by the 8:00 a.m. bell.

School Security -- Adults in the School Building

We ask all parents to drop off their children and pick them up on the playground. Please remember that school is in session earlier and later for our 7th and 8th grade students. We need to keep our building secure for our students between the school hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.

To ensure safety all adults need to sign in at the office and wear a visitor's badge. Staff is required to stop all adults without a badge and escort them to the office.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP

Please do not park in the "Quick Drop" area -- one parked/empty car causes backups and congestion for many.

For safety reasons please escort your children across any street or parking lot. Though it is tempting, waving your child to come to you across a street is unsafe and has caused a few "close calls" in the past.

We also ask that you refrain from taking/placing cell phone calls or texting during drop off/pick up after kids have been released while you are in the school zone.

QUIET ZONE NEAR MS WING AFTER SCHOOL

Be aware that 7th and 8th grade homerooms remain in class until 3:00 p.m., while K-6 grades are dismissed by 2:49 pm. Please do not stand near the school windows that border the playground during elementary pickup. Adult conversations can be heard even through the closed windows and are a great distraction for our 7-8 grade students. If you would like to converse with other parents at elementary pickup, please step away from the MS classrooms. Thank you!

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT

Please join us on Tuesday, September 17th, for Classical School's first back-to-school night! More information to follow.

PEGASUS FLYERS, CLASSICAL COLUMNS, THE CLASSICAL WEBSITE, AND FACEBOOK

Classical School uses several communication vehicles for valuable school information:

Pegasus Flyer

The white envelope that typically comes home on Thursdays (Gr. 1-8) is called the "Pegasus Flyer." Important notices and school papers are sent home in this envelope weekly.

Classical Columns

The Classical Columns, the school's newsletter, is typically published once a month and emailed home at the beginning of the month. Please take time to read this important publication as you will find answers to what is up and coming, information on CCSA Board work, club and activities updates, school calendar, and much more! If you would like a hard copy, you may pick one up outside the school office.

Classical School Website

If you haven't had a chance to visit our school's website lately, please do so! It is an excellent resource for current and prospective families who would like to learn more about classical education and the Core Knowledge Curriculum! Visit the website for teacher biographies, enrollment information, and so much more! www.classicalcharter.com

STUDENT OPENINGS AVAILABLE IN 7TH & 8TH GRADE

Classical School currently has openings in our 7th and 8th grade classes for the 2019-20 school year. Please share this information with anyone you know who may be considering another option for 7th or 8th grade this school year.

Please note: We do not currently have any openings in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, and there are waiting lists at all of those grade levels. If you know a student interested in grades K-6, please contact Joanne Bielmeier at bielmeierjoann@aasd.k12.wi.us to have that student added to the end of the waiting list.

K-8 HOMEWORK REQUESTS

If a student will be absent due to illness, etc., please call the office at 920-832-4968 before 8:30 a.m. to report it. (An email to the teacher does not suffice.) This is the time to request to pick up the day's homework, which is collected in the school office. Any homework that has not been picked up by the time the school office closes at 3:45 p.m., will be placed on the homework cart and put in the hallway outside the office. The school building is open until 6:00 p.m., so you will have access to the homework until that time.

TREATS AND SNACKS IN THE SCHOOL SETTING

The Appleton Area School District continues to update practices that provide our students with a safe, welcoming, and healthy environment. As part of these efforts, the AASD School Wellness Policy Committee recently updated School Wellness Policy 458 in order to align our school wellness procedures with best practices.

Birthday and other celebrations during the school day will not include students bringing in snacks from home to share and will instead take place through non-food practices.

Recognizing students in ways that better support overall student wellness also has a variety of positive benefits:

  • Reduced social and economic pressures on families to provide celebration snacks
  • Increased cultural awareness for families with respect to birthday and other celebrations
  • Avoidance of unintended consequences related to food allergies and decreased complications for students with medical issues

Together we will continue to ensure that we are implementing best practices that focus on increased student wellness for every child, every day in the Appleton Area School District.
