The HRS Leader
Region 9 High Reliability Schools-December 2020
Wrapping Up the Fall Semester
It would be easy to put the work you are doing in High Reliability Schools on "pause" because of the current circumstances. However, please know that the work of HRS is just as important now (or maybe even more so!) as you navigate these difficult times.
Consider the questions you are facing...
How do we keep our students and staff healthy?...That's Level 1!
What do our parents think about our current plan?...That's Level 1!
Do teachers have what they need to teach effectively?...That's Level 1 and Level 2!
How do we engage our online learners as well as our face-to-face students?...That's Level 2!
How do we make sure we are teaching the most important content?...That's Level 3!
How do we know all of our students are learning the most important content?...That's Level 3!
Ongoing Support
One of the best parts of High Reliability Schools at Region 9 is that it comes with all the support you need. Our team is ready to help you as you do the hard work of HRS.
In terms of implementing HRS, our team can support your leadership team as you dig into survey data, create an action plan, work to implement strategies to close any gaps you notice, etc. This can take place face-to-face or virtually. Often, our team can create professional development sessions to help your campus with key components of the HRS process, including PLCs, data tracking, formative assessments, instructional models, and of course, HRS Level-specific training.
Teachers
If you have teachers attending training in NASOT (The New Art and Science of Teaching), then they are also receiving support from an R9 team member. Please encourage these teachers to work with their assigned support staff as they write goals, try new strategies, track their goals, etc. Because of our current circumstances, much of this support has been virtual, but this can be really effective if teachers choose to engage in these conversations, planning, and even video observations. We want to be an avenue of support for your teachers.
Scheduled Sessions
Cohort 5 Leadership Session: January 21: Level 3 Assessments, Session #360957
Cohort 6 Leadership Session: January 20: Coaching Classroom Instruction, Session #360962
***Dr. Tammy Heflebower of Marzano Resources will be facilitating this session via Zoom. You and your team may attend in person at Region 9 or virtually.
***Please make sure you and your leadership team have registered for the correct session. Any changes made to these days will be sent in an email from the registration system.
Instructional Rounds
We are tentatively planning to host instructional rounds in a modified format Feb. 9. We're still working on the details, but as of right now, representatives (not the whole team) from Cohorts 5 and 6 will be able to attend this session to experience instructional rounds in an alternative format. Be watching for more information from your R9 rep.
NASOT
A key piece to High Reliability Schools, especially in Level 2, is The New Art and Science of Teaching (NASOT). It has been extremely challenging to convert this normally six-day, face-to-face training into 3 days of virtual training to address campus needs for reducing subs and time off campus. However, we think it has gone really well!
Spring Semester
As of right now, here is the schedule for the next academy of NASOT training:
Jan. 20 #360978 (***NOTE: This will be a one-day virtual session)
Feb. 16-17 #360994
March 24-25 #361004
Canvas
There is also an online course available through Feb. 28 for training in NASOT. This was designed to replace the original format of the six-day academy. However, each part is separate and can be used to "catch up" anyone who might have missed one part. Please talk to your R9 team member if this is something you are interested in using to train your teachers in NASOT.
2020-21 Certification Information
If you are interested in certifying in any HRS level this, it is important to let one of us know. The best way to inform us about your interest is to complete and submit the certification application as soon as possible. The application for certification can be found here but also on our website at bit.ly/R9HRS.
Certification will look a little different. Marzano Resources has moved to using Moodle as an evidence collection tool. You'll work with a Marzano Resources associate throughout the process with them reviewing your work and giving feedback along the way. Once they feel you are ready for certification, a certifier will review the evidence to make a certification decision.
As always, your Region 9 team will work with you as you go about creating action plans and collecting evidence.
As you are considering the possibility to pursue certification, please keep the following critical commitments in mind:
Level 1 - Safety procedures, protocols, and PLCs are alive and well (while the work of PLCs is never complete, PLCs should be organized and meeting regularly about those PLC topics before pursuing certification in this level).
Level 2- There is a school-wide model of instruction, teachers are setting goals and participating in instructional rounds.
Level 3- Your campus practices include a curriculum based and data-driven instruction, a vocabulary framework, and work on proficiency scales/TEKS breakdowns.
Moodle Accounts
If you are interested in beginning the process, our next deadline will be Jan. 15. Please keep in mind that as a contracted service, your Moodle account will not be available automatically.
