Q: How long have you been working at Sargent Central?
A: This is my 15th year at Sargent Central.
Q: Describe your job. What do you do in class?
A: I am the general elementary music teacher and the JH/HS choir teacher. We learn different types of music from different time periods.
Q: If applicable, did you teach anything else alongside choir/music?
A: I used to teach band for my first five years here. I have also been the One-Act director for the past five years.
Q: What is your favorite part about your job?
A: The students are my favorite part. We have wonderful students at this school and I am lucky to have taught almost everyone at some point.
Q: What do you like to do outside of work?
A: I love to spend time with my husband and children, as well as going to concerts.
Q: Do you have any future plans and/or visions for the theatre department? New plays? New songs?
A: I plan to keep working on plays that tell a story about something important. I also want to keep up with the success the music department.
Q: Tell us a couple fun facts about yourself!
A: I used to teach in Oregon, I play the violin and I recently became an EMT.
Mrs. Kim Mahrer
Q: Which college did you go to?

Q: How long have you been at Sargent Central?
A: I have been here since the fall of 1988.
Q: What did you do before teaching?
A: I was in school, school, and then teaching! (I worked in a Pizza Shop in college!)
Q: What is your favorite part about teaching?
A: I love teaching kids to read, but honestly, I just enjoy seeing them “get it” and experience success!
Q: Why did you choose to become the Title 1 teacher?
A: I’ve always liked tutoring and working with small groups.
Q: What do you like about teaching Title 1 instead of Kindergarten?
A: Title 1 and classroom teaching are quite different. I focus on what students are specifically struggling with. Figuring out the “why” they are struggling and “how” they learn best is a mission of mine!

Individuals also contacted us to do such things as raking their yard or picking up a fallen tree.
The purpose is to provide volunteer opportunities for the Choice Ready initiative in North Dakota. The goal for students is to have twenty hours of volunteering throughout their high school career.
Graduation
The Sargent Central seniors will be graduating on May 22 at 2 P.M. in the Activity Center.
What's happening?
Together Time
By Nevaeh Keller
For Together Time, our lovely senior Kadyn Wolters set up a relay race. She was assisted by many students of varying grades who helped set up the scooters, the bikes, and the potato sacks. There were three rounds. First up was elementary, then high school, and then six teachers were chosen to race against each other. Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Schmit, and Ms. Olson were on one team. On the other team were Mr. Koppang, Mr. Banderet, and Mr. Nelson. In the end, the ladies came out on top!
High School Artist in Residence
By Nevaeh Keller et. all
Elementary Artists in Residence
The elementary classes are doing their Artist in Residence and will be making a mural that will go up in the hallway! The mural is based on the image below and will be 7 feet long by 6 feet tall. Every elementary student will be making a small square of the mural on chipboard. The chipboards will be put together by their Art teacher this year, Morgan Wagner.
Graduation
As we near the end of the school year, we come to the end of a journey for the Sargent Central graduating class of 2022. The graduating class includes Patience Greenwood, Chayse Bopp, Nevaeh Keller, JT Peterson, Kadyn Wolters, Chris Kochevar, Alexis Schreiner and Cheyenne Treat.
Currently, they’ve begun the process of figuring out music, flowers, and decorations. They’re also working on their assigned speeches they are intending to give. The ceremony is going to commence on Sunday, May 22 at 2 PM in the Sargent Central Activity Center.
Prom
This year’s prom theme was inspired by the Roaring '20s. Due to the market being the way it is, the Juniors had to work with what they had up in the Activity Center and they pulled it off! Their compromise and repurpose of some decorations made a beautiful prom night for everyone to enjoy.

Teacher Appreciation
Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up! Teacher Appreciation Week will be from May 2nd to May 6th. Let's show our favorite Sargent Central teachers some love since they have been working very hard this year.
Extracurriculars
JO Volleyball
Five Sargent Central volleyball girls head over to Lisbon on Tuesdays and Thursdays for practice with their Junior Olympic Volleyball team.
They have been putting in the extra work for the regular volleyball season coming up in the fall. The Lady Bulldogs will also be involved in league this summer located in Richland. Players include Abigail Erickson, Jami Bopp, Anna Hoistad, LeiLani Ringer, and Alana Anderson.
Baseball
Our Sargent Central boys have started playing baseball in Oakes. The first game was on April 14 and ended in a win! They say that they are all enjoying the season and the practices so far. Good luck to our boys!
Track
The Bulldogs have recently started up their track season. In this issue, we interviewed the Head Coach, Mr. Koppang.
Q: What's it like as head coach of the co-op?
A: It's very exciting to work with all of the students and get to know them better, especially students from the other schools. It's also fun watching them come together to be successful throughout the season.
Q: Are you looking forward to any specific meet this season?
A: The meets in Lisbon. Regions are there this year. I always look forward to Regions and hope we have a successful meet to bring lots of kids to state!
Q: How have the few meets gone so far this season?
A: We have had some outstanding performances by kids! We knew we would be strong this year, but also had some kids surprise us with their growth from last year, which is always great to see. Since it is the start of the season, we are just looking for good effort right now in hopes that the kids can perform their best and peak at the end of the season.

Choir
By Nevaeh Keller and Patience Greenwood
State Music and State Bound are both on the way in early May. State Bound is the concert that the choir and band host for parents to watch their kids perform their contest pieces that starred at regionals. The concert is scheduled for May 1st at 6 pm. State music rotates between Bismarck and Minot. This year, State is in Minot and everyone is going! This is a first for the Sargent Central choir where all students who participated at regionals will go to state. State music goes on from May 6 to May 7.
Late in April, several students of varying ages all participated in drumline for the spring concert. They performed several songs and the kids participating in the drumline worked hard throughout April to perfect their performance for the concert.
eSports
As the eSports season came to an end, The Rocket League team narrowly missed the playoffs, ending the season with a 9-12 record. The Madden Team on the other hand has advanced to the playoffs and they played their first game, unfortunately losing. Good luck to the eSports teams next year!
Speech
After her qualifying performance, in regionals back in March, Kadyn Wolters went to state in Minot for the Dramatic speech category. At state, competitors compete in their respective category for two rounds and if they are in the top eight at the end of the two rounds they will compete in a final round for placements. Despite her good performance at state, Kadyn, unfortunately, did not make it to the final round, but she says “She had a good time working towards it throughout high school.”
Class Activities
Seniors
By Cheyenne Treat and Nevaeh Keller
In FCS this month, some of our seniors had the chance to make some treats inspired by the Easter holidays coming up in late April. Recently, they worked on making salads, soups, and a biscuit/muffin in just one hour! The lesson the teachers were given was time management so everything for dinner got done around the same time. They also got the chance to work with some instant pots and make meals, which you can see in the picture to the right.
In English IV, the seniors are working hard. They’ve recently gone through a Hamlet unit. They’re watching movies, writing essays about these movies, and exposing themselves to new forms of language/speaking and literature. One of the projects they were excited about was writing a rap about the play Hamlet by Shakespeare. They were challenged to come up with their own lyrics and beats, then they were also expected to dress the part.
Juniors
The juniors have been working very hard these last few months of school. In Math, they're learning about degrees of exponents. In Food and Nutrition, they have been learning about how to cook with instant pot pressure cookers. In Chemistry, they recently finished a lab dealing with changes in density having to do with stoichiometry. The students in Novels started an independent book project where they got to pick a book to read and do projects on. History has been very interesting for the students. They are learning about the Vietnam War and heading into the 80s.
Sophomores
By Mya Swanson and Alana Anderson
The sophomore class is working on creating sculptures made out of small pieces of wood, a coat hanger, nylons, and paint. First, we placed the coat hanger in the woodblock and next continued to bend the coat hanger to our preferred shape, then we put our nylons over the intended sculpture and are currently painting a total of 10 white coats so the base will be hardened and easier to paint our ideas onto it. Many of us are painting accordingly to a specific artist and trying to match their aesthetic.
The sophomores have also finished the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. We had just taken the test and we have also just finished our essay for the novel.
Freshman
In P.E., the Freshman practiced their archery skills.
In FCS, the Freshman got to make an Easter treat! They made nests out of Rice Krispies and marshmallows and then put little eggs in the nests.
7th Grade Highlights
What is the 7th-grade working on this month?
The 7th grade class started learning about East Asian countries like China, Japan, and Korea. These students will present projects on different countries and physical features in the area. Next, the students will pick a few locations in Asia and we will use VR Google Earth to "visit" these. The students enjoy using the VR machine and doing things out of the normal.
Fifth Grade Highlights
By LeiLani Ringer
Q: What is the fifth-grade class working on this month?
A: The next few Units in 5th science are Geology themed. We will be studying how Earth formed and different types of rocks and minerals.
Q: What do fifth graders like to do during your class?
A: Talk- hahaha. They like working in small groups and sharing ideas. They are very good at asking questions when a subject is difficult to understand, or if they are genuinely interested.
Q: What are the main focuses on teaching the fifth-grader this month?
A: Throughout the year, 5th-grade science dives into a bit of each scientific field. For this month, the 8th grade will be focusing on Earth Science concepts while learning about geology and the rock cycle.
Planetarium
The Sargent Central Astronomy classes went to the planetarium, at VCSU campus, for a field trip on April 11th. They spent two hours at the planetarium and got to observe the different constellations while learning about how they were discovered, and their namesakes. Many discoveries in space were named after gods or other things in mythology so they learned about their stories as well.
Cadaver Lab
On April 22, the Anatomy and Physiology class, taught by Mr. Askerooth, traveled to Aberdeen Presentation College to learn more about the human body. It was a hands-on experience and everyone who went enjoyed it. They learned about how everything sits in the body and how everything functions. They used what they learned in the classroom to answer any of the questions that had been thrown at them. They said this was a great experience to remember.
