Math Updates
In Math this week, we started unit 5, which deals with fractions and multiplication of harder facts. We started the week exploring fractions with different wholes to help students know that a whole is not always the same thing. We then learned how to use numerators and denominators to represent different fractions. Finally, we took a look at equivalent fractions, stressing that the wholes must be the same if we are going to compare them.

Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we began our Nonfiction Unit. We started by learning how to "rev up our minds" for nonfiction reading. This type of reading is factual, true, informational reading. We previewed books looking at the headings and parts of the books. We thought about how the book was set up and what we thought we would be learning before we actually started to read it. When reading this we learned that we need to slow down our reading rate and read slower so that our brain can take in all of the new information. We then learned to pause as we read and think about what we have learned, rereading if it was confusing. Finally, we learned how understanding the main idea of each section can help us understand what the author is trying to teach us.

Word Study
New sorts on Monday!
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing we started our informational writing unit. We brainstormed everything that we personally know a lot about and wrote them all down. Then we picked one of the ideas and broke the topic into parts to help us organize our thinking. This information will be turned into sections of our nonfiction books moving forward.
