BREAKING DISCOVERY

Hello. I am scientist Emily Qualls here with my lab team at Science Corp. We have just unharnessed a new power that will change the face of energy. You're probably wondering just what that is, and I'll tell you. We have unlocked the secret for using nuclear fusion as an energy source. What is nuclear fusion, you ask? Nuclear fusion is a reaction which consists of atomic nuclei ( with low atomic numbers ) that fuse together to form a heaver nucleus, releasing energy in the process. For example, the sun uses nuclear fusion and the energy released is sunlight. This is a breakthrough not only for science, but for energy and people because now we can use a new way to create energy instead of using fossil fuels that pollute the earth. This alternative energy source could change life as we know it.

FUSION vs FISSION

Let's keep things clear between fusion and fission, because things get a little tricky if you confuse the two. FUSION is when two atomic nuclei fuse together and create energy as a result of the bonding. FISSION is when a nucleus splits in two, releasing energy. A simple trick to remember this is FUSION has one S, just like the reaction resulting in ONE nuclei. FISSION has two S's, just like the reaction resulting in TWO nuclei.

NUCLEAR SAFETY and PRECAUTIONS

There are some safety concerns when creating nuclear energy, such as radioactive waste which is produced as a bi-product of the nuclear energy production process. Radioactive materials can be used beneficially, such as to treat cancer, but generally are harmful if exposed to the public. What has to be done to ensure safety, is making sure the plant is regulated with strict safety laws to ensure the prevention of a nuclear accident.


In the past, there have been nuclear accidents with fission plants, such as the case of Chernobyl, where human error caused a fire and an explosion in one of the nuclear towers, which resulted in immediate evacuation of the town and surrounding areas, and still has highly radioactive content today.


Our goal with producing nuclear energy is avoiding accidents such as the Chernobyl case, providing safe alternative energy. Ensuring nuclear safety includes the design and construction, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear installations such as power plants and waste storage facilities. Aside from this, qualified staff is highly important for nuclear safety, making sure they understand the severities of a tiny mistake, and enforcing proper safety rules. In order to ensure this, proper research on operation and safety must be conducted, and there must be a focus on security to ensure optimum safety.


In areas with the potential to establish a nuclear power plant, there must be safety precautions taken for the public. In case of an emergency, operating reactors must be shut off, removing heat from nuclear reactors to cool them down, and containing the radioactive materials. By following these steps, this ensures that the nuclear waste and materials will not pollute or contaminate public air or places.

ECONOMIC BENEFIT of NUCLEAR ENERGY

Nuclear energy is one of the cheapest electricity sources, roughly costing on average 2.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, and has remained under 3 cents for the past 18 years. Nuclear energy has a higher up on the market against petroleum, gas, and coal because it's so inexpensive. Compared to these other energy producers, nuclear energy is more stable because the prices haven't changed significantly, while the other sources have had significant increases and decreases over the years. In the future, nuclear energy could provide a world with less pollution, resulting in better health for people and the planet. It's a big step in the world of energy, and our lab team's discovery has only just opened the doors to this life changing opportunity.
