Charger Check-In
Thursday, November 7, 2019
A Note from Ms. Owens
We are approaching the end of the trimester. Next Thursday, your students will bring their report cards home which means Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming. They will be held on Tuesday, November 26. This year, parents will be able schedule their conference on-line. More details and the link are shared later in the Check-In.
I want to take this opportunity to remind families dropping off students to drive slowly and to watch for little ones. We've also had a number of cars turning left onto Kedvale when they leave the parking lot. If you have family members dropping off your student in the morning, please share this information with them. Safety for our students and families is our priority.
Finally, please scroll down to the posting about Directory Spot to make sure your most current information is included in the directory.
Thank you for all you do to support the St. Catherine community! Have a great rest of the week.
Peace,
Kristine Owens
Warm Clothes for Recess
We will go outside for recess as long as the "feels like" temperature is 20 degrees or higher.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
- Click on the link below and then click on the tab that contains your student's grade level.
- Next, scroll down until you see the name of your student's teacher.
- From there, you will see all the time slots listed. All available slots will have a sign-up box and space where you can click.
- Find the time slot you would like and click in the sign up box.
- At the bottom of your screen, click "Submit and Sign Up."
- On the next screen, you will be prompted to enter your name, your email address and your student's name.
- Finally, click "Sign Up Now" and you're done!
Parents are able to make adjustments to the sign-up until two days before conferences. At that time, the sign up will lock. You will be able to see your sign-up, but you won't be able to make changes.
You will receive a reminder email with your time slot two days before conferences. If you have questions, contact kowens@scaoaklawn.org.
Go Blue for World Diabetes Day on Thursday!
On Thursday, November 14, St. Catherine’s will be going BLUE for World Diabetes Day. Each student is asked to bring $1 to donate to JDRF and wear BLUE to support and promote Type 1 Diabetes Awareness.
Ellie Buczko is in 5th grade at St. Catherine’s. She was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 5.
Shannon Ferriter is in 4th at St. Catherine’s. She was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 7.
Scarlett Larmon is in 3rd grade at St. Catherine’s. She was diagnosed with Type 1 four days before her fourth birthday.
Supporting these girls and everything they go through each day to fight this disease means so much to them and their families.
TYPE 1 DIABETES (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and, at present, nothing you can do to get rid of it.
TYPE 1 DIABETES strikes both children and adults at any age. It comes on suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. While insulin injections or infusion allow a person with T1D to stay alive, they do not cure the disease, nor do they necessarily prevent the possibility of the disease’s serious effects.
KNOW THE SIGNS
Warning signs of T1D may occur suddenly and can include:
*Extreme thirst *Frequent urination
*Drowsiness or lethargy *Increased appetite
*Sudden weight loss *Sudden vision changes
*Sugar in the urine *Fruity odor on the breath
*Heavy or labored breathing
*Stupor or unconsciousness

Tuesday Hot Lunch Ordering
The link for placing hot lunch orders is below. Please remember that ordering closes at noon the day before delivery.
There will, of course, be days when parents have ordered a hot lunch and their child is absent. On those days, parents (or another designated person) are welcome to pick up the child's lunch. In order for this to happen, parents must notify the school of the hot lunch pick-up prior to 11 AM and then the actual lunch must be picked up before 12:30 PM. We cannot keep lunches beyond that or send them home with students due to food safety regulations.
