Slavery- how it was started

In the early 17th century, European settlers in North America used African American slaves as a cheaper kind of labor source than indentured servants. Indentured servant were the poor Europeans. When a Dutch ship brought 20 African Americans to the British colony of Jamestown, Virginia, slavery was spread to all the American colonies. Slaves mainly worked on tobacco, rice and indigo plantations of the southern coast in the 17 and 18th centuries. Then after the Revolutionary War, many colonists in the North called for a slavery abolishment. After the war ended, the new U.S. Constitution acknowledged the institution, counting each slave as three-fifths of a person for the purposes of taxation and representation in Congress and guaranteeing the right to repossess any “person held to service or labor”.
