Havens Library March 2015 Update
Reading Grows Your Brain!
March Library News
We are finishing up the voting for this year's California Young Reader Medal Award nominees. It's been so hard to vote this year, because all of the nominated books are excellent. All grades have read or listened to the nominees in one to three categories, and we will submit our votes to the the California School Library Association (CSLA) on March 31st. We also talked about democracy, voting, and the voting process, and our discussions were lively and interesting. We will keep you posted as to the winners!
March is Women's History Month, and we have been sharing aloud some great picture books, both fiction and nonfiction, with all grades. Ask your students what famous American woman they have learned about. We have read about Elizabeth Blackwell, America's first female doctor; the women who helped change the laws allowing the killing of birds for fashion; America's first women baseball players; Esther Morris, who started the whole ball rolling towards all American women getting the vote. it's always a fun topic, with lots of discussion and questions like: "Why isn't there a Men's History Month?"
