Havens Library March 2015 Update

Reading Grows Your Brain!

March Library News

We have a new Pinterest page! Geared towards teachers and parents, we have pinned lots of information about what we are doing in the library, great new books, handy tech tools, digital literacy and citizenship information. Come take a look! It's a great one-stop-shop for all things library!

We are finishing up the voting for this year's California Young Reader Medal Award nominees. It's been so hard to vote this year, because all of the nominated books are excellent. All grades have read or listened to the nominees in one to three categories, and we will submit our votes to the the California School Library Association (CSLA) on March 31st. We also talked about democracy, voting, and the voting process, and our discussions were lively and interesting. We will keep you posted as to the winners!

March is Women's History Month, and we have been sharing aloud some great picture books, both fiction and nonfiction, with all grades. Ask your students what famous American woman they have learned about. We have read about Elizabeth Blackwell, America's first female doctor; the women who helped change the laws allowing the killing of birds for fashion; America's first women baseball players; Esther Morris, who started the whole ball rolling towards all American women getting the vote. it's always a fun topic, with lots of discussion and questions like: "Why isn't there a Men's History Month?"

March 23rd Assembly

March is Art IS Education Month, and we celebrated with Lea Lyon, who delighted Havens students with her interactive assembly, showing and telling about her career as a watercolor artist and children's book illustrator. Connecting her books to our Second Step lifeskills program was seamless, as Lea's books deal with inclusion and anti-bullying behaviors. We are pleased to add two new original watercolor paintings to the walls of Havens Library.
