To kick off this event, we are having a fun week of spirit wear. Your child can pay $1 to participate in any spirit day or $3 to participate in all days! Please look for more information about The Big Event in the coming weeks.

Indian Creek Elementary's School-Wide PBL Begins!

Our entire school is participating in a multi-faceted project based on the book, The Sandwich Swap by Queen Rania of Jordan Al Abdullah. Each grade level will be working on different aspects of the project in the coming weeks. Fifth grade began their portion of the project on Friday, October 31st and we are now in the PBL homestretch!. The students have completed their research and the first activity. Next week, the students will be re-grouped and will then collaborate to create a healthy school lunch menu featuring foods that are influenced by various cultures prevalent in the United States. We are so excited to see the final products!!

Lunch Bunch & Open Tutoring

Hello parents!! In an effort to help kiddos who are struggling to get their work completed and turned in on time, or who might need additional help with understanding what they're learning, we are offering a "Lunch Bunch" and "Open Tutoring" times throughout the week. Below, you will find the times and locations they are able to come in and get additional help with any late or missing assignments.

Academic Tutoring

Fifth grade teachers are offering tutoring on Wednesday afternoons, from 3:05-3:35. Your child's teacher will notify you if they would like your student to attend tutoring. If you feel your child needs to attend tutoring, for either reading or math, please contact your student's homeroom teacher.

Missing and Late Work

Some 5th graders are really struggling getting their assignments turned in on time. Parents, we are asking for you help in stressing the importance of being responsible and getting work done by the due dates we give. If a student is missing an assignment, they will receive a Missing Work Notice in their folder. Please sign these notices and encourage your child to complete the assignment. Missing work is given a zero in the gradebook until it is turned in. We do not want our kids to develop a habit of failing to turn in homework before they go to middle school!

Go ahead and update!

Technology has given us the go-ahead to update all student iPads to the new iOS 8.1 as of October 22nd. Please have your kiddo update at home.

**** LISD Technology Notice ****

* IOS 8.1 for iPad

- Tested successfully with no breaking of LISD supervision and management systems. Confirmed basic functionality and Air Server is working.

- Fixes the Student Gallup Poll QR code/web link problem. It works properly with IOS 8.1.

- All students and staff are encouraged to upgrade to IOS 8.1

This week in ELAR

We will have our first Reading CBA (Curriculum Based Assessment) on Tuesday.

This week we will begin learning about MORAL and THEME and how to find them in various stories using text evidence. Our big focus will be understanding, making inferences and drawing conclusions about theme across various texts and genres. We will also continue learning about subjects and predicates in sentences.

Please continue to make sure your kiddo is doing their daily reading log and logging at least 20 minutes of reading a day and completing iStation on Wednesdays! I have really enjoyed reading their logs each week and seeing their thought process!

Monday--Reading Log

Tuesday--Reading Log

Wednesday--iStation on home computer or iPad

Thursday--Reading Log

This week in Math

We will start to study the division of larger numbers (up to 2-digit divisors and 4-digit dividends). Please practice the basic math facts with your child at home. Knowing the multiplication and division facts makes it easier to solve long division problems.

This website provides a link to several resources we use for math:

The website for their math textbook is www.pearsonrealize.com. Their log-in is their last initial, first initial, ID number@lisd (example: va12345678@lisd). All student passwords are abcd1234.

Think Through Math is another online resource your children have accessed. Please encourage your child to access this great resource as well. They all have their usernames and passwords saved in their Evernote account.

This Week In Science

This week we will explore the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound energy.

Key Concepts for the Week:

  • There are different types of energy including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound energy.

  • We can use different types of energy including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound energy.

  • Bicycles, stereos, computers, lamps, and toasters are useful objects that demonstrate the use of mechanical, sound, electrical, light, and thermal energy.

Below you will find a link that will assist you with making science connections with your children at home. It is called STEMscopepedia. Please ask your child to log in with their username and password in order to read this wonderful resource.

This Week in Social Studies

We will continue our unit on Comparing the Colonies. The big question we will be focusing on is, "How were the three colonial regions alike and different?" The students will be comparing and contrasting the thirteen colonies and will be able to design a billboard to promote one of the colonies. I am so excited with this unit because the students will gradually start to see some of the reasons that led to our American Revolution, which we will study soon! We will be able to bring our knowledge from Language Arts and synthesize information, draw conclusions, summarize and make predictions as we are learning about the Thirteen Colonies and about the unrest the colonists began to exhibit.
