The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - November 15, 2020
A Note from Principal Welch
Dear Families,
Happy Sunday! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. I spent some time with my family and enjoyed a fabulous hour walk today with my dog. He is hoping this activity continues! :)
Thank you to those who attended our PTA meeting to listen to our new Counselor, Stephen Wallinger, speak. He introduced himself, shared a little about what a school counselor is and isn't, shared thoughts around Anxiety and Trauma, and shared several resources with us all. If you have not visited his Counseling website, I highly encourage you to do so. There are so many resources available to you. If you are looking for additional resources and don't find them, please feel free to reach out to him at swallinger@nsd.org.
I also presented that I was hoping to hold a school picture day in early December, but with the skyrocketing COVID cases, along with Governor Inslee's press conference today, we have moved our picture day to mid-January. I will continue to inform myself about cases in our area and communities and will share a further update in January. It is my primary focus to keep students, families, and staff safe. I could not bring everyone into school for pictures with such a high risk.
I will close my remarks by hoping you stay healthy, stay safe, and express kindness to one another. We are #SailorsStrong!
Take Care!
Jen Welch, Principal

Progress Reports
** Note, if you are a Kindergarten family, your progress reports will be mailed slightly earlier so you have these reports for your meetings next week.
After you receive the progress reports, if you find you have questions, I ask that you please reach out to your child's teacher. In this progress report, we are stating if your student is on standard or if a particular area or skill is an area of needed growth. Lastly, if your student receives support through Special Education (Learning Center, FSA, Speech, or OT), you will also receive progress reports at this time.

Highly Capable Screening and Assessment
The Accelerated Models and Programs Department is working on the 2020-2021 testing plan for students with highly capable needs.
Students in grades 6 & 7
We plan to begin by remotely administering the NNAT3 to students who were referred for testing or are new to Northshore in grades 6 and 7. Our department will contact the families of these students when we are ready to begin screening their student(s). Questions may be directed to hicap@nsd.org.
Students in grades K-5
We are still working on the highly capable screening and assessment schedule for grades K-5. Our department will update families when we can test.
Thank you,
Accelerated Models and Programs Department

Becoming a volunteer
At Cottage Lake, we have always had a very strong foundation of classroom and PTA volunteers. This year, we are all thinking outside the box and looking for new, creative ways we can welcome volunteers into the remote classrooms. As our classrooms continue to establish routines and systems, teachers will be ready to think about how volunteers could be helpful to them.
To prepare for becoming a volunteer, there are several steps we need you to complete. One important note is that our background check form will need to be updated EACH YEAR! In the past, we have asked for them to be updated every two years, but to keep our information the most up-to-date, this is a shift we are making district-wide.
Please visit this NSD LINK to find all the steps you will need to follow to complete your volunteer paperwork. Please click on the bar that says, "Online Volunteer Application Process" for all the steps that need to be completed.
Thank you for considering becoming a Cottage Lake volunteer!
Need Technology?
Does your Cottage Lake Elementary student need a device for online learning? Please use the link below to sign up and sign the waiver. After you submit your form, Mr. Paganini will be in contact with you to set a pick-up time for you. For students in Kindergarten & Grade 1, we are issuing iPads. For students in Grade 2 through Grade 5, we are issuing Chromebooks. Students will keep these devices at home until we return to school.
Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning
Beginning Wednesday, September 9, we are offering free meals for ALL children ages 18 and younger. Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. This is GREAT news for each of our families; these are your tax dollars at work. I am so pleased this funding has been continued, allowing us to extend these meal services until the end of December.
For quick links:
- CLICK HERE to place an order for DAILY MEALS. [The order window time will be 2:00 PM-11:59 PM the day prior to meal pick-up. Order include breakfast and lunch, including 16oz of milk. Orders placed for a Friday pick-up will also include meals for the weekend.]
- CLICK HERE to place an order for WEEKLY MEAL PACKS. [Weekly Meal Packs will include breakfast and lunch for an entire week, including a gallon of milk. The order window will open at 2:00 PM every Wednesday and close at 2:00 PM every Thursday. Pick up for these meals will be on Wednesday the following week.]
Please consider ordering food! Our district is committed to feeding our children during this challenging time.
