Hansen Weekly Update
January 27, 2023
Hi Hansen Students, Parents, and Families!
It seems hard to believe, but we have just wrapped up our final full week of school in January. We are excited to see what February brings! Our students and staff continue to work hard and bring great energy!
This week, in addition to traditional learning experiences, we celebrated the Lunar New Year within our building, with students making morning announcements, participating in activities, and today, we had the Lion Parade dancers perform for our students and staff. It was awesome!

What's Happening in Social and Emotional Learning at the Hansen This Month?
In Kindergarten and Grade 1, students have been participating in a program called We Thinkers from Social Thinking. They learn all about emotions, following a group plan, and body awareness.
Take a moment at home to speak with your student about feelings this month! Here is an activity that will expand their emotional vocabulary and support emotion identification.
Feelings Book
Begin by stapling four pieces of paper together on the left side, into a book form. At the top of each paper, write a feeling word. Start with these feelings: happy, mad, sad, and scared. Either draw a picture or take a photo of your child making that facial expression. Together, talk about times the child has felt and experienced that emotion. Draw a picture, use photos from a magazine, or personal photos of these times and add them to the page. Don't expect your child to be able to come up with examples independently. You may decide to make the book and then fill in the examples across time. For example, after a birthday party you might add a picture on the "happy" page.
As your child begins to learn and identify more emotions, add pages to increase the child's emotional vocabulary. Examples include, but are not limited to, proud, disappointed, frustrated, excited, worried, comfortable...

REMINDER: Winter Health Update from Nurse Bethany and Nurse Kathy
The cold weather has arrived and that means an increase in cough and cold symptoms. We are seeing a lot of stuffy noses and sore throats. If you’re able, please send your child in with an extra box of tissues for their class. Also, please remind your student the best way to cough is into their elbow like a vampire and good hand hygiene includes washing all areas of hands for 20 seconds.
Canton Public Schools guidelines regarding required absences can be found here (p.71-74), but we’re including them below for your convenience.
Illness Requiring Absence from School
Upon return from any absence, students must provide a note describing the reason for the absence. If your child is out of school for five days or more you should notify the school nurse. Any school absence for five or more consecutive days requires a note from a health care provider which should be presented to the school nurse before the student returns to school. Without medical documentation these are considered unexcused absences.
When you call the absentee line of your school, please specify the nature of the illness. *Hansen absentee hotline is (781) 821-5085 x1
Here are some guidelines to follow. Keep your child home if he/she/they:
● Has evidence of a newly developed cold (runny, stuffy nose, coughing, sneezing). The greatest period of contagion is the first 2-3 days after onset of symptoms.
● Has Covid-19 or Covid-19 symptoms.
● Has the flu or flu symptoms.
● Has an elevated temperature, over 100° (degrees) within the past 24 hours.
● Has a suspicious rash.
● Has pain or discharge from eye(s) or ear(s).
● Has had an upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours.
● Has a contagious disease (i.e. strep throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, conjunctivitis, etc.) until he/she/they has been seen and treated by a doctor with at least 24 - 48 hours of treatment, is fever free for 24 hours, and feels well enough to be able to participate in school activities.
If your child should develop any of these or other symptoms hindering the child’s ability to learn during school hours, the school nurse will notify you and the child will be dismissed.
