THE WEEKLY WITNESS
21 Nov. 2014 | St. Mary Magdalen School | San Antonio, TX
Our Mission: empower students and our community to witness the Gospel and grow in excellence through faith, academics and service.
Nuestra Mision: empoderar a los alumnos y a nuestra comunidad a ser testigos del Evangelio y crecer en la excelencia a través de la fé, las académicas y el servicio.
Justice: A Close Relative of Dignity
The Catechism of the Church states: "Social justice can be obtained only in respecting the transcendent dignity of man."
In my simple terms, I see our value of Justice as flowing from our value of Dignity in this sense: DIGNITY means that each of us is a child of God, and JUSTICE means that every human being should be treated with the love and respect worthy of a child of God. Justice also means that when such dignity is threatened, we have a duty to act for those whose dignity is threatened.
I really like Pope Benedict XVI's emphasis on sharing during this time of Thanksgiving: sharing what we have advances JUSTICE. Sharing, to me, is the purest form of the last and all-important word in our mission: Service. Our value of Justice is less about an eye for an eye and the superheroes putting the bad guys away than it is about sharing what we have to serve the poor and vulnerable.
