The 19th Century

1881

The first ancestors to the headphones were invented. These headphones were very large and were only used by telephone operators.

1888

More ancestors of the headphones were created. They weighed about 10 pounds almost like having a boombox on your shoulder.

1895

The Electrophone was created, giving upperclassmen to listen to audio from the local opera house to the comfort of their own home. The electrophone was wired from the opera house all the way to the resident's house.

Inventor

Early 1910

Nathaniel Baldwin was the inventor of the first pair of audio headphones. He created them on his kitchen table in 1910 and sold over 100 sets of headphones to the U.S. Navy, making him a rich man. He later became bankrupt because he sent all of his money supporting the Mormon Polygamous Movement.

Patent

Nathaniel Baldwin never patented the headphones. There is no included evidence on why he never did, but some say he was an idiot.

Immediate Impact

The invention of the headphones immediately impacted the radio stations and the military. Most of the headphones were used by the U.S. Navy, radio operators, and telephone exchanges.

Later Innovations

1937

The DT-48's from Beyerdynamic became the first dynamic headphones to hit the market. They instantly became the most popular type of headphones in the market.

1949

AKG produced their first pair of headphones, the K120's. If the were produced today, theorists say they would sell rapidly in Urban Outfitters.

1959

In a show in Tokyo, Stax debuted the world's first electrostatic pair of headphones. The SR-1's would start being manufactured in about the next year.

1979

Sony came out with the Walkman headphones. This was a major turning point in the headphone industry because these were the first ever portable headphones.

2000

Bose unveiled a new and improved set of headphones called the QuietComfort Line. These were set to cancel noise from the outside to enjoy your entertainment with a lot more comfort.

2008

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Lovine joined with Monster, and created the Beats by Dre Headphones. They instantly became the best and most popular headphones of the year and continued to progress with different types and features as the years went on.

Overall Impact

Overall, the invention of the headphones greatly impacted our world. No matter if you are listening to music, operating the radio, or communicating to pilots with the U.S. Air Force, headphones are used by billions of people every day. There is not one public place that does not have at least one person using headphones. The communication of the world is so advanced and that could not have happened without the headphones. Headphones are used every day from people around the world and life would not be the same without them.
