Classroom Updates
First grade will be working on reading and writing words with short vowels in the month of September. We will continue working on reading sight words. In writing, first graders are working on writing in complete sentences with proper spacing and ending punctuation. We will continue learning about one another through our Star Student writing. In math we will be working on counting and comparing data. We will be learning to count on from a visible part. We will be continuing working on routines and establishing our classroom communities.
Hello Third Grade Families,
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! We are so excited to see your students back in the classroom with bright eyes and big smiles! We are going to be working on a lot of skills this year. So far in August, we have been reinforcing procedures by building a social contract, using interactive modeling, and practicing the different procedures that go along with a new school year. Academically, we have been reviewing skills from second grade, and will be beginning third grade materials after Labor Day. Thank you for all of your support thus far, and we are so excited to partner with each of you throughout your child's school journey. Have a great day!
Hello families!!! The first several weeks of school we have been reviewing academic routines, social/emotional learning, hands-on activities and basic review in parts of speech, topic sentences, and math facts.
This month, the Fabulous 5th Grade would like to share what great things will be happening! In our math curriculum, we will be starting to learn about place value concepts for multiplication and division! For English Language Arts (ELA), we will begin studying narrative non-fiction within the Wonders curriculum. In Science, we will begin with studying properties of matter and how we observe it and model it. Finally, we will be exploring our Young AmeriTowne curriculum which explores lessons in banking, economics, and job skills. There will be more information regarding AmeriTowne coming out soon! We are so excited to learn and grow with all of our students!

Mesa Elementary is focusing on teaching Respect for the month of September. Respect can be summed up this way: It’s about treating others as you would like to be treated. Children who show respect and are shown respect feel safe around their peers and teachers. They listen to their friends even when they disagree. They admit when they have made a mistake. They feel free to express themselves and allow other to do the same.
How can you teach respect at home? Model respect. Children look to adults for clues about behavioral expectations. If they see their teachers, care takers and parents treating others with respect and compassion, they're more likely to do the same.

Notes from the Nurse
A note from Nurse Janice!
As we begin a new school year, please see below for health information from your school nurse.
The health of your child matters!
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR STUDENT HOME FROM SCHOOL:
- When your child is so ill, they will not be able to engage and learn while at school.
- A temperature of 100.4 or higher. Students with a temperature of 100.4 or higher should stay home until they have gone at least 24 hours fever free without the aid of fever-reducing medication (such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.)
- Vomiting. Students who have vomited should stay home until they have gone 24 hours without vomiting without the aid of medication.
COVID
- If your child tests positive for COVID, or if any member of your immediate household tests positive for COVID, please reach out to your school nurse.
- If your child is exposed to someone who is positive for COVID outside your immediate household, please reach out to your school nurse.
Your school nurse will guide you through the current guidance and expectations (Phone:719-382-1370)
HEALTH OFFICE VISITS/BLUE NOTES
- Students occasionally visit the health office for minor complaints and injuries. For these non-emergent health office visits, you will receive an automated dialer from the district (after school hours) notifying you that your child was seen in the health office. Your child should also bring home a health office 'blue note' from the school that shares some details of the health office visit.
- Parents will be contacted by the school nurse for any health office visit which would require the child to be picked up early from school, for any visits that require follow up medical care outside the school setting, or for any injuries that might require follow up by the parent once the child gets home from school.
