Jen P's Counseling Group
Senior English, Junior CCR, and other MC news
Update #1: 8.16.14
It's been a great first week! I've really enjoyed catching up with returning students, getting to know our new students, and starting my 16th year with MC! This year has brought a lot of changes and I want to make sure you know about all of them, -- including a new teacher, new location, and new website for the SUHSD (School Loop — replaces Infinite Campus).
Our new teacher, Alison Liberatore, will be teaching senior social studies (Economics/Government) and junior College and Career Readiness. Halo Smart is back, teaching junior social studies (US History) and senior College and Career Readiness. All four teachers share an office at the bottom of building 5 in room 112. Chris Brandin, our staff assistant, is back part-time (Mon-Thurs, 8:30-1:00 only) and his office is one floor above ours in room 226. Our office number rings in both offices: 650-306-3120.
As you know, each MC advisor works with 26 students, in addition to our teaching responsibilities:
Jen P: Aleixo-Garcia
Alison: Goldstein-Messerschmidt
Jen B: Mier-Sheffield
Halo: Shuder-Zaro
So I am your academic advisor :-) I'll be the contact person for schedule changes, grad checks, progress in college and MC classes, and just about any other question you might have. Chris will handle all bookstore questions.
This year all students will have College and Career Readiness as their first period class (12:30-1:20). Alison and I are working on the junior CCR curriculum together; she will have half of the juniors two days a week and I'll have the other half those two days, then on the other two days we will switch — so juniors will have one of us two days and the other one on the other two days. Jen B and Halo are doing the same with the senior CCR class. We wanted to build more counseling time into our schedule, so one day a week we will each meet with our counseling groups during the first period time block. We will go over the rest of the MC schedule on Monday.
We've spent the last four days getting to know each other, responding to the summer reading, and talking about ways to be successful in school. We are going to continue those conversations this next week as we also move into our regular curriculum. This past Friday, students toured the campus and one of the goals was to find out where all their college classes are being held so they know where to go this week. MC reverts to its regular time slot of 12:30-3:10 on Monday as college classes begin that day. We have reminded students repeatedly to be early, as the parking lots fill early and classes will be crowded as students make schedule changes.
Grades for the summer session just posted and students know how to access them in WebSmart — I will be updating transcripts some time this week. I have more information to give you, especially about the new website the SUHSD is using, but for now I just wanted to connect and let you know the first week has been awesome and I am really excited about this year! If you have any questions , please let me know.
