Weekly Update
April 6-10
Weekly Update
This week we will have e-learning on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Please consider being an observer in your child's Canvas. I will attach the PDF on how to do that. You should have gotten an email inviting you.
myON: Maybe your child has seen this when logging into AR. I added a button at the bottom of this newsletter for an exciting new reading program that your child can find when they go into the AR button in Clever. Watch the video and get your child started.
To make things easier for you to keep track of I have provided the Canvas checklist that your child sees when doing assignments on Canvas as an attachment. I thought it may help you to have this so you can print it out at home or save on your computer using a program like Kami so you can mark off assignments as completed. Use as you see fit and I hope it helps.
This week there will be a new way for your child to submit the math pages or any paper or pencil assignments. Your child will learn how to take a picture using his/her Chromebook and upload the picture into the Canvas assignment. The first time will be tricky I am sure and your guidance will be appreciated. But, I know they will catch on quickly and will soon be doing it on their own.
I have also added more buttons to the Canvas homepage:
· Weekly Elearning: will take them to the modules
· Zoom - takes them to the Zoom meeting
· Assignment Checklist: will take them to the checklist
· Optional: educational sites that are completely optional
· Submitting Workbook: take them to the tutorial on submitting paper/pencil assignments
If you need me to Zoom with your child on the importance of doing his/her work correctly and to the best of his/her ability let me know.
Mrs. Bauer is tracking students' progress as well and is making calls to kids.
I will do the final check and enter attendance on Monday morning. Per our instructions from Dr. Lorey if they are missing 1 assignment they will receive an unexcused absence for that day.
Again, I will be checking all of the assignments late on Sunday evening and will record the entire previous week's attendance on Monday morning. Please check often and reach out to me as soon as possible if you have any questions or issues at all so we can work on them together. Communication is key!
Please remember that ALL assignments for each day will be detailed inside that day's module in Canvas.
Please remember :
- If there is an Assignment or Quiz in Canvas, it will most likely require your child to SUBMIT.
- ALWAYS BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A SUBMIT BUTTON IN CANVAS.
Please refer to last week's newsletter for more detailed information and directions regarding the e-learning expectations.
I am also including a link to a video that does a really great job explaining how to navigate within the ConnectEd platform that we are using for Reading on Canvas. In the future, we will more than likely be assigning grammar and spelling worksheets on ConnectEd that can be completed online using online tools or also can be printed if you prefer. This video helps explain these online tools.
Instructions for Observing in Canvas
Zoom with Mrs. Lehmkuhler - Wednesday, April 8 at 7PM!!
I AM VERY EXCITED TO ZOOM WITH AS MANY KIDS AS POSSIBLE ON WEDNESDAY AT 7 P.M.
This is NOT required, but I really would love to see everyone participate if possible. I think it will be great for us all to see each other friends and chat a little about what we are doing!
I made a Canvas button so your child can go to that button close to 7 pm and wait for the Zoom to start.
I will be teaching a little bit about our writing project so I hope to see everyone there.
UPDATE ON AR ONLY OPEN FROM 8am to 8pm
- Your child gets to AR through Clever
- Your child can take a test on any book from your home library if they listen to a book online, or the story from his/her reader.
- You can type in the title of any book into AR to see if there is a quiz. There are thousands of titles on AR, so my best advice is to try anything your child has read or listened to.
- Some AR tests will read the questions to your child. It is indicated with a headphone and your child just needs to turn it on. I ask that if the test reads to your child, please let them do it on his/her own.
- If this is not an option, you can read the questions and choices to your child. However, please let your child answer the questions independently. If he/she chooses the wrong answer please don't correct them. This is really hard, I know, but I would like a true picture of their comprehension.
- Mrs. Bauer is allowing this to remain open as long as we feel it is being done with integrity.
Attendance
- We are required to take attendance daily. In 1st grade, we will be tracking a few things daily that will count for Attendance.
- I will be contacting you each evening via text/email if assignments aren't complete. If you know ahead that you will be finishing it late please let me know. I hope you know I am not trying to nag you, I just want your child's attendance to be counted correctly.
- ALL assignments will be checked on Sunday at Midnight of the week they are assigned for completion. Students will be marked absent for a full day if most of the assignments on that specific day are not complete, a half-day will be recorded if all assignments are not complete. Attendance will be entered into the system on Mondays.
Xtra Math
- This needs to be done daily. The program will tell your child they are done for the day. If your child does not get that message then it is not completed.
- I have been getting the reports and it appears that some of the kids are not putting forth much effort when answering the problems. I see them answering easy problems like 6+2, and 4 +2 incorrectly.
- Please encourage your child to try his/her very best as I will be using this as a grade for the 4th quarter.
- This program also looks at how long it takes your child to complete each problem and times them out.
- Remind them that knowing the facts quickly is also very important. I will send a report so you can see how your child is doing.
- Assignments/Quizzes that will be located in the daily Canvas Module. These will consist mostly of Reading Assignments through ConnectEd in the "To Do" button that requires your child to SUBMIT. However, there may be other assignments but those will all be located in the Canvas daily module.
- There may also be some Math assignments or quizzes through the daily Canvas Modules as well.
- If there is an Assignment or Quiz in Canvas, it will most likely require your child to SUBMIT.
- ALWAYS BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A SUBMIT BUTTON IN CANVAS.
- 45 minutes a week, EVERY week.
- This can be done a little each a day or all at once as long as 45 minutes is completed each week.
- This is DIFFERENT than XTRA Math.
IReady Reading
- 45 minutes a week, EVERY week.
- This can be done a little each day or all at once as long as 45 minutes is completed each week.

EPIC
I have been hearing great things about EPIC. A program that allows your child to read and listen to thousands of books. Mrs. Johnson has made a screencast on how to navigate it.
You can then bookmark this site and your child can get on it anytime. You bookmark a site by clicking on the star in the address bar.
Scholastic Learn At Home
- This is another great program that is being offered to teachers and families by Scholastic free during this time.
- I will include assignments from this program in your child's Canvas modules.
- Please click here
- Scroll down until you see choose grade level and choose grades 1-2
- Your child can then listen to the stories by clicking on "Take Me There" Watch the video or do the activity.
- I will assign some of these but if your child wants to explore you can go ahead and bookmark the site. You do this by clicking on the star in the address bar. it won't hurt if your child repeats a story if I assign it.
Prodigy
Prodigy is very popular with the kids. Many have been asking about it:
- Your child now has a Prodigy account through Clever.
- Go to Clever and sign in through Google to get started
RAZ KIDS
- It would be great to have your child do one or two books a day.
- I will put a flight check on a Canvas assignment after Spring Break. Your child will need a quiet place to read because it will be recorded and sent electronically to me. You are more than welcome to sit with them to guide them through it but if he/she gets stuck please don't supply the word he/she is stuck on just simply tell them to go on.
If your child finishes his/her assigned school work
- watch Phonics videos on the phonics button on Canvas Dashboard.
- watch Math videos on the math button on the Canvas Dashboard.
