On Thursday in Homeroom, our students watched a video about Martin Luther King, Jr. by Kid President (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xXZhXTFWnE). It’s important for students to understand why they have a holiday on Monday. My positive message next week will center on the great work of Dr. King. Feb. 1, we will introduce students to the 2022 BMMS Social Justice Challenge. This optional challenge will allow students to explore an area of social justice that is important to them. I will share the challenge with families too. More info to come soon.
This Week’s Positive Message: This week Mrs. White read to the students…Today, I’d like to talk about the act of gossiping. It’s the spreading of rumors or untrue stories about someone or an event. It not only hurts the subject of the gossip but it can also make the person doing the gossiping be an untrustworthy friend, irresponsible, and unkind. Spreading gossip or rumors doesn’t even have to be untrue. It can be talking about someone behind their back. Gossip can start out as something small but can balloon into a full story of lies and deception. If your conscience tells you the subjects of the discussion wouldn’t like what they were hearing, it’s time to bring that conversation to a close. What can you do to stop gossip? Be an upstander, “Say, ‘I don’t appreciate this conversation—let’s change the subject’ or ‘that’s my friend, and I won’t listen to someone badmouthing them.” This is not an opportunity to “take matters into your own hands.” It doesn’t mean that you go and call them names or threaten them. If you think it’s serious, SAY SOMETHING. Go to a teacher, your counselor, or to our assistant principals. We can help you solve issues and make good decisions. “Words have no wings but they can fly a thousand miles.“ ~ Korean Proverb
Coffee with the Principal Recording: We recorded Tuesday’s Coffee with the Principal. Here is a link to that recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koSGoGyOl1A
Donation Drive: Our Leadership class is collecting donations to benefit San Diego Youth Services (SDYS). We are collecting art supplies to benefit their art therapy program. We’re also collecting warm coats, sweaters, and hoodies as those are always in need in colder months.
Our drive will run from Monday January 17th through Friday January 28th. We will have donation bins in 3 places around campus: inside the front of the office, outside the library, and outside the leadership classroom, room 406.
SDYS is very thankful for any art supply donation, but have specifically requested canvases, sketch books, poster boards, construction paper, paint, markers, colored pencils, crayons, colorful clay or yarn, crafting materials, picture frames, and terracotta pots (small & large). SDYS has many programs that benefit homeless youth in San Diego. Please click here if you’d like to learn more about the SDYS Youth Emergency Shelter.
Please email Mr. Anella (aanella@powayusd.com) with any questions.
We hope you enjoy the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday!
