Friday Focus
September 13, 2019
From Mrs. Barry:
Over the past several weeks, our staff and CIT have been working to update MWE's Mission and Vision statements. A mission statement explains why we exist and defines our fundamental purpose. It clarifies our priorities and creates focus. A vision statement explains what we must become to fulfill our mission. It gives us direction while describing our future.
MWE's updated Mission is:
At Meadow Wood Elementary, our mission is to provide personalized academic, social, physical, and emotional support for each student to grow and reach his or her personal best.
MWE's updated Vision is:
Meadow Wood Elementary is where…
· Our mistakes turn into goals.
· Our failures turn into achievement.
· Our pain turns into empathy.
· Our friends turn into family.
Our collective commitments are our Core Values: Every Child, Collective Greatness, Collaborative Spirit, Limitless Curiosity, and Moral Compass. These three pillars come together as a catalyst for meaningful action within the school. From this, we develop our goals and our expectations of success.
Thank you for your support and dedication to MWE! Welcome home!
Memorial Safety
FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN, it is imperative that all follow the school zone regulations and crossing guard directions. Additional police presence has been requested to assist with this. Thank you for doing everything you can to keep our Eagles safe!
BOOK FAIR!!! September 16-20
Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
· Set the example. Let children see you read.
· Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.
· Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair dates: September 16- 20
Shopping hours: Monday- Thursday 7:30-3:30, Friday 7:30-12:00pm

Elementary Strings Program - FIDDLERS
Several parents have expressed an interest in having a Fiddler program at Meadow Wood. This Suzuki-based program teaches a specific, cumulative curriculum through large and small group experiences, rote instruction, and multiple performance opportunities. There are currently 6 schools that have programs in SBISD that have existed for over 40 years. Meadow Wood had a program in the past, but it is not currently up and running.
Students in Fiddlers miss 15 minutes of lunch or recess to attend a private violin lesson during the school day once a week. Students also have a group class after school once a week.
Generally, there are 10 lessons before Christmas and 12 after the New Year. The program is funded by the parents, and they attend the lesson to learn how to be the home teacher. Cost is $775, plus a $60 activity fee. This cost covers the full year. Parents must provide students with an instrument, the appropriate Suzuki books, and coordinated reference recordings.
In order for us to pursue having a Fiddlers program at MWE, we would need to show enough interest. If you are interested in your child participating in a Fiddlers program at MWE, please contact Shirley Labiosa at 713-251-6209 or shirley.labiosa@springbranchisd.com and give her your name. Thank you for your consideration.

2019 FALL FUNDRAISER
MWE PTA is making school fundraising easy this year. We have listened to your feedback from last year’s survey where an overwhelming number of you said you preferred writing a check over selling wrapping paper, cookie dough or Booster-thon. So our 2019 MWE fall fundraiser will be donating to the Eagle Excellence Fund. 100% of your contribution will go directly to the PTA general fund which will impact your child’s educational experience at MWE. We value contributions in any amount. Your donation to the Eagle Excellence Fund is tax deductible and may even be matched by your employer if they match charitable donations.
Here are just some of the things that your Eagle Excellence dollars go towards:
· New Playground for MWE
· Student Field Trips
· Faculty and Staff support
· Numerous programs including Red Ribbon Week, Milers, Talent Show and many more
· Staff Appreciation
· Family Point Resources and Sister School Support
