WMS Weekly Bulletin
February 4-9, 2019
Y'all, most of us need differentiation. I am the first to admit I do not process much when I only have one method of presentation. For example, if I am to read something on my own and then answer questions about it, I will struggle because I need to talk it out with someone. In the same way, if I only hear something without seeing it, I struggle.
This came to life for me this weekend when my husband and I installed an over-the-range microwave ourselves. We had the written directions to follow and let me tell you how well that worked out for us...{insert upside down emoji here}... I ended up resorting to YouTube where I found a video with step-by-step visual and auditory instructions that made the written instructions make so much more sense!
When we think about what we do in the classroom and our ultimate goal of having our students learn information, we have to ask ourselves if we are providing the content through multiple means of representation. Are kids seeing it, hearing it, touching it, and then applying it? When we present content through a variety of means, we are making new neural pathways that will get the information to truly stick in long-term memory. (If you'd like more information about this differentiation strategy, check out this website: Universal Design for Learning - Representation, this YouTube video, or these easy-to-embed strategies from Oakland University.)
As you finalize your lesson plans for this week, look over them and see if you are presenting information in a variety of ways so that all the different types of thinkers are getting access to the learning.
Go Warhawks! And, remember, you belong here.

Week in Review
It's time to vote for TOTY, PEOTY, & AEOTY!
The deadline to vote for this round (in case we need a second round) will be Thursday, February 7th.
Safety
Upholding expectations for all drills is supremely important. Remember back to the lizard brain - we have to practice doing it right all the time so if we have a real situation, we respond accordingly. Help keep scholars quiet and treat every drill seriously.
Collaboration Spaces
Also, both collaboration rooms have posters that show how the rooms should be left after they have been used. Remember Lolly's favorite saying, "Leave it better than you found it," and help teach our scholars this valuable skill!
WMS Food Pantry
From Nurse Flater
Remember every scholar must have a pass to come to the nurse’s office EXCEPT in a true medical emergency. Please do not tell a scholar to come to me during passing periods.
Remember that our scholars should not be sent to the nurse (or outside your classroom for any reason) during the last 10 minutes of class.
I ask this for several reasons:
- They are normally late to the next class which causes interruptions to that classroom.
- In most cases they must come back to your classroom to get their belongings which causes interruptions to your classroom.
- Sometimes they are counted tardy and their attendance must be changed.
I understand if it is a medical emergency (read: gushing blood, vomiting, allergic reaction, or other serious injury) and they need to come.
If you have any questions, please email/call me. My goal is to keep healthy scholars in the classroom.
Putting in Sub Requests
If you feel better in the morning and you find that you can't delete it, please send Ms. P a text message at 936-727-9726 so that she can delete it.
When you need a sub to cover your class and you have someone in mind, please send Ms. P an email with the date, the reason, full day or half day, and the substitute's name and she will input the information into AESOP. If you plan this route, please make sure you have spoken to the substitute and they agreed to sub for you.
