Language Arts
In Writer's Workshop, students are finishing up our work on how-to writing. They are working on self-evaluating their writing using a checklist and elaborating on their ideas. As always, boys and girls are working on developing the mechanics of writing including:
- sentences that start with capital letters
- spaces between words
- known words are spelled correctly
- use of letter sounds to spell unknown words
- sentences end with a punctuation mark
Guided reading groups are continuing to happen daily. Your support at home really shows when students come to group prepared (with their little book bags in school each day) and are able to increase their fluency on the books that they practiced reading at home. Please keep reading and talking to your child about their books! It is also important that your child works on his/her fluency with sight words. Try and take some time reading and writing them a few times each week.
In comprehension, we are asking and answering questions about key details (characters, setting, problem, solution, main events) in a text. When reading at home, encourage your child to use our wh (who, what, when, where, why) question words to generate questions about the text being read. This can be done with little books, library books or books they have at home.
Math
Math
We are working hard on finishing up our Math unit 8. Students are counting and comparing groups or objects and numbers with a focus on using the vocabulary greater than, less than and equal to. Have fun sorting objects or snacks at home and using these vocabulary words to compare the groups.
