From the Principal
Happy Friday Hawkins Families!!
It feels like we are just starting to figure things out a little and as I look at the calendar the year is almost over. It saddens me that I won’t get to experience the end of the year with the students and families, but knowing that all of the Hawkins families are safe makes it bearable. We are learning things weekly that we will use for the future, and your input has been invaluable. I have stated that having the students in front of the teachers is the best possible option, but I can say that through this we have discovered some online options that are more efficient and I will use in the future. I have been so impressed sitting in class meetings and seeing the progress students have made. I can see a future where teachers teach the process of learning online in their classrooms so that we are prepared for events like this. As I have thought about some of the issues we have encountered, like too many platforms and learning the process of logging in, we will move to teachers starting the year teaching these items, so it is just the norm if we should have to go back to online learning. I worry about the uncertain future both from Covid 19 and from the impending budget cuts. What I don’t worry about is that the Hawkins school family; staff, students, families and the community will work together to do what is best for our children. I have heard from peers in other districts how frustrated they are with this whole process, and the lack of working together from the parties I just mentioned. That is truly not my experience at Hawkins. I love sharing the ways we have all worked together to find common ground and solutions. We don’t always agree and it still is far from perfect, but I truly feel we are all a part of the decisions. That is only possible through communication and being willing to listen to other points of views. I honestly feel we have gone through this together, and I will tell everyone that will listen how proud I am to be your principal.
Brighton Area Schools 2020-2021 Enrollment
NEW Kindergarten Enrollment!
It is crucial that we get accurate enrollment numbers for Kindergarten for staffing. If you have a Kindergartner for the 20-21 school year please complete the enrollment process as soon as possible. https://www.brightonk12.com/Page/6990. If you have any issues with this please just reach out to me.
2020-21 New Enrollment Update: Brighton Area Schools enrollment office will resume the collection of new enrollments starting next week with an alternate electronic document collection process since face-to-face appointments are not an option at this time. Updated instructions and the link to upload your student’s information and documents will soon be available to you on the Enrollment webpage for child’s grade level (by Tuesday, April 14th). There are checklists available online to help you prepare your documents -- email our offices should you need any clarification or have any questions. ALL requirements for entry will remain the same. You will have the most success if you double check that you have all necessary documents, make sure they are complete and signatures of parents are present in all areas where indicated. Keep in mind our staff will be working from home best they can -- your patience and kindness is expected and appreciated. Office emails to contact if needed are below:

Maltby News (for our 4th graders)
● Go to www.brightonk12.com
● Click “Select School” on the upper, right-hand side of the page. Select “Maltby Intermediate” as the school
● Scroll down and on the left-hand side there is a link to click on that says “5th Grade Year Long Encore Selection 20-21.” Please look carefully and do not select that 6th Grade link.
● This will bring you to a page that allows you to select another link on the right side of the page called “5th Grade Year Long Encore Selection 20-21.
● The form that needs to be filled out will show-up.
Please submit one choice as soon as possible *Note: if you have more than one 4th grader entering Maltby you will need to submit one form for each child. Thank you and we look forward to meeting your child in August.
Student Placement information- many of you contacted me after I sent out the placement questionnaire for Hawkins, wondering if their was something like that at Maltby. This is what I found out:
Student Information Sheet…
Parents please note that we have Student Information Forms available on our Maltby Counseling page. This year it is an online form. This form gives parents the option of communicating anything they feel should be taken into consideration as we begin compiling next year’s schedule for students. It should be noted that this is not a teacher request form and is completely optional. If you opt to fill out the form please do so by May 18th- again this is an optional form and not necessary for scheduling.

This is the time for nominations for our PTO board. The current board is happy to continue for another year, but we also wanted to open up to anyone who would like to run for a position. If you are interested please email hawkinspto@gmail.com
McKinney Vento Act
The Brighton Area Schools is part of a consortium to serve students in temporary living situations that provides financial support for educational needs, referral for housing, clothing and other needs, general support and technical assistance. To ensure compliance with federal law, all school staff must help identify student living in the following situations: emergency shelters/transitional housing, motels/hotels, car, parks or public spaces, shared housing due to a loss of housing or economic hardship, or living temporarily with non-parent or guardian.
The district’s homeless liaison is Starr Acromite and each building has trained staff members to assist in the endeavor. Our consortium contact at the Livingston Educational Service Agency is Candice Uyttendaele.
Please contact your building principal or Starr Acromite at 810-299-4040 for information/assistance.
