The Weekly Word from CDS FP - April 15-April 19, 2019
Looking Back
Hello All,
It was a wonderful week at school last week with spring and the warm temperatures seemingly here to stay!
Ms. Kim returns on Monday after visiting the New York Dalton school for a week, and we look forward to hearing more about her trip there and what we in the FP can learn from the experience.
Unfortunately, last Saturday, our April 13 Track and Field for grades 345 at Chadwick was canceled due to poor air quality. Good news though - it has been rescheduled for May 25@ CI.
Players from K12 went to KIS on April 13 to compete in soccer. Mr. T has a write-up, below!
Thank you to Mr. Tronsgard and all the FP staff for a successful Sports Day. Students ran, jumped, swam, played, collaborated and showed wonderful sportsmanship all day ,Thursday!
A giant thank you to the FP PTA for the donation of the House Shirts! In the past, we have done shirts for special events (one per year) and all in one color. But this year, we did four colors - one color to represent each of our FP Houses: Earth, Wind, Water, Fire. Irene and Julian’s drawings were selected as the specially showcased student art on the front and back. Our scholars are now all in possession of a shirt that they can wear to represent their FP House. An example of this would be Sports Day, Spirit Day - Day 150, the Grade 3 & Grade 4 Camping Event, etc.
Our FP PTA has supported numerous events this year, and as a result of volunteering their time and effort, they have been able to raise funds. The PTA Council chose to donate the House shirts to the students, and we are very grateful, and look forward getting great use out of them.
There sure are a lot of great things happening from now until the end of the year; be sure to check out DATES TO KNOW!, below.
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Grade 1B, Drama class, Silent Art Auction, Pre-K & K community field trip, and Soccer. Thank you, Ms. Bahr, Ms. Nortier, Mr. Read, Ms. Pabon, and Mr. T.
Drama class with Ms. Nortier
The first graders are nose deep into their scripts, preparing for their stage performances. They are rehearsing during every Drama period, but also sometimes take a break from all the hard work and work on fun things like team building skills to improve their ensemble work.
We look forward to sharing our final production with everyone.
Grade 1 with Ms. Bahr
This week, Grade 1 combined everything they learned in social studies and math to make a store. They decided on a name for their store and picked five goods or services they wanted to sell in that store.
Since we’ve been making change with $1.00 in math, students used their knowledge to exchange money for their goods/services with customers. It was so fun!
Soccer with Mr. T
Overall it was a fantastic day and we look forward to our final two soccer events of the year on May 11th at Chadwick and May 18th at GSIS.
Pre-K and K Community Field trip with Ms. Lee and Ms. Pabon
Pre K and Kindergarten had their annual Community Field Trip. Kids were so excited to visit different places in Cheongna and see if their community looked similar to the ones we have seen in books. We left school around 9:30 and made our first stop at a cafe to have our morning snacks. Right after, we had an appointment to visit the police station. Police officers showed us different tools they use to do their job and they even let kids to get in the patrol and talk on the speaker. We also went to the bank to see how people get money out and put money in. After the bank, we stopped by the post office to learn how we can send letters and boxes to family and friends. Later on, we went to homeplus to get everything we needed for our lunches and snacks.
Finally, we spent the afternoon at Lake Park where kids had the opportunity to have a picnic and play at the playground.
Silent Art Auction with Mr. Read
Thanks to parent, student, and teacher participation which helped us to raise KRW1,044,000 to benefit the TNKR (Teach North Korean Refugees) organization! The Silent Art Auction was a community achievement featuring artwork from FP, Middle, and High School Divisions, with parents, students, and teachers alike bidding on artwork (this year was the highest amount of student bids AND student purchase work, and also had the most staff artwork submitted (Mr. Cavasin, Ms. Pantano, Mr. Menzel, and Mr. Riniker all submitted artwork).
Although there were fewer number of artworks submitted this year, the total amount bid on artwork exceeded last year by close to KRW200,000, and as in previous years 100% of artwork submitted was purchased!
Thank you for helping us to embody the CDS slogan, “Pioneering to Serve” in this year’s Art Auction and for making this year’s event a memorable and successful one.
Students in Ms. Bahr’s 1st grade class prepared for the Silent Art Auction selecting (2) artworks from their portfolios they would like to donate. Each blue sticky note represents an artwork chosen; many students wrote a suggested starting bid on their sticky note (with values ranging greatly!)
Students in the FP were especially excited to learn about the auction process. In class they rehearsed the process of bidding and counter bidding that takes place at an auction, and learned about charitable giving, and the many good works done by the TNKR (Teach North Korean Refugees) that the auction goes to benefit.
