Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
October 26th, 2019
From the Assistant Director
It was a short but busy week as our students kicked off their second term of the year! The faculty have posted their T2 Assignments on our school webpage so please take some time to review them. The Assignment is an important part of the Dalton Plan which enables our teachers to be transparent for our students about what they need to do in order to be successful.
Here are some updates about recent events and happenings at CDS! In school, the student council kicked off their discussion forum's this week as they hope to give voice to student issues and work towards their solutions. Outside of school, last weekend our Orchestra headed to a music festival and forensic competition at KIS. On Wednesday night we welcomed parents to join us for our first Parent Teacher Conference event of the year. We changed the time to after school, and we had much better attendance than previous PTCs! Our volleyball teams had their final regular season home games and look forward to their tournaments this coming weekend. We are excited to host the girls tournament on Friday and Saturday, so please make sure to come and cheer on our girls! Cross Country had their final meet of the season at SIS and will finish their most successful season to date this coming weekend as well! With all these events, Mr. Monette has asked that I emphasize to our student athletes (and all students) to get enough sleep which will improve their performance.
This Tuesday, October 29th we invite parents to join us from 3-4pm for a Parent Teacher Forum where we will discuss our schools reputation and brainstorm ways we can improve it as a collective. Please see below for more information.
I hope that everyone has a fantastic and fantastic weekend. Make sure you dedicate some time for your own self-care in order to get centered and ready for the week ahead!
All the best,
Mr. Jason Musselman

What are the odds?
"AP Statistics have been working hard over the first term by finishing the first two units of AP Statistics of exploring data and collecting data. Students have learned to collect data in proper ways to avoid bias. Along with this information they have learned to display data and which method is best depending on the type of data. Now we are moving into probability and inference in which student will continue with these questions and apply them to contextual problems. Students started learning probability by simulating Pepsi's claim of a winning percentage with simulation using dice. Students now are moving into conditional probability and the difference between long term and short term probability." - Mr.Mark Adams, Math Teacher-
Religion and Life in AP World History Class
"Students started Term 2 of World History I off with a debate topic. Throughout this term, Grade 9 students will be studying world religions, their effects historically, and the role they have served both in the past and present. As an introduction to the unit, students were to engage in a pro/con argument regarding if religion should be taught in schools. Students were randomly assigned, and thus may have had to challenge their own views as they researched this topic. Students were engaged and collaborated as they began their research, with the goal of presenting the findings to their classmates the following week." - Mr. Aaron Gomez, Social Studies Teacher-
Self Defense In HPE
16 students will be heading on a field trip to try out rock climbing. Just another way that students are learning to live healthy and successful lives!
Boys Volleyball Updates
On Friday, our boys headed to ICS-U, riding their momentum from Wednesday,s victory over ICS-P. Facing the best team in our league, CDS knew they had a tough challenge ahead of them to get a victory. In set 1, ICS-U began to show just why they are in 1st place in the division, pulling out to a lead, capitalizing on any mistakes the Phoenix team made. Set 1 went to ICS-U by a score of 16-25.
Not to go away quietly, CDS looked to battle back in set 2. A close game throughout, with both teams committing costly errors at key times kept things interesting. Additionally, the battle for net supremacy heated up, with Anton Anton Zaitseva and Leo Hwang each getting several blocks on tough hitters. Additionally, the battle between outside hitters Injae Lee from ICS-U and Tylor Park from CDS was interesting, with each of them racking up some amazing kills. Unfortunately, CDS had a few more mistakes and let the game slip away 20-25.
A third set saw CDS bring even more passion and momentum, and this got them out to an early lead. This set was the closest of all, with the best volleyball of the match being played by both teams. Plenty of exciting rallies, largely due to the defensive leadership of liber Caleb Park, kept everyone’s eyes fixed on the court. Neck and neck throughout, the score ran to 19-19, when the momentum and luck shifted slightly to ICS-U, and they finished the match by a score of 20-25.
Girls Volleyball Updates
The second set was very similar, as both teams exchanged leads, until Sophomore Jueun Lee stepped up to the service line and served 10 in a row. CDS won the second set easily 25-13.
The third and fourth sets saw more passing and service errors, as CDS totalled 16 missed serves (season high) on the day. After losing a close 3rd set by a score of 26-24, CDS bounced back and won the fourth and final set 25-21. It was a strong day at the net for both middles, as Jiah Choi totalled 8 kills and Jueun Lee totalled 13.
The girls play their final game of the season on Friday October 25th at home vs. Dulwich. Come cheer them on
X-Country Updates
This past Wednesday the cross country team traveled to SIS to race on their new course at Changgokcheon Waterside Park.It was a beautiful day and a nice course to run. CDS had 21 members of its team participate in the open race.
For our girls, Chae Kim placed 5th and Jinny Kim placed 8th out of 30 girls. For the boys, Chris Kim placed 22nd and Yoonho Myoung placed 24th out of the 97 boys. All the other runners did a great job as well and few had personal best times.
This was the final race of the regular season and now all that is left is the final tournament on Saturday November 2nd at KIS.
Dissections In AP Biology Club
"After researching and preparing for two weeks, AP Biology Club conducted their first dissection. Students seemed to be beaming from their interest, and investigation/identification of complex parts were done due to prior research. AP Biology club strives to provide labs that are not provided by the class itself, and this dissection served as another stepping stone forward." - Collin Park (Class of 2020)
