Developing a Growth Mindset Part 5
Dealing with mistakes and failures is not easy for adults, much less children, but this is a skill that is critical to helping our students grow up to be resilient and successful adults.
This month's installment of "Developing a Growth Mindset" will focus on providing you with some resources you can use with your child related around this topic. The first resource is actually for you. This short video clip for parents is part of a discussion series put on by the Greater Good Science Center about embracing children's failures so that they learn to take on challenges.
Here are a few children's books that have a great message about the value of mistakes and overcoming failures.
The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires
The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes by Mark Pett and Gary Rubinstein
Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg
Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty
Snowflake Bentley by Eileen Spinelli
A Little Bit of Oomph by Barney Saltzberg
We want students to understand that errors and failures can sometimes work out even better than the intended goal--a concept worthy of sharing with your children.
Mistakes That Worked: 40 Familiar Inventions and How They Came to Be by Charlotte Jones (1994) is a great book for students of all ages. This book highlights that some of the items we eat and use everyday were invented by mistake, such as the chocolate chip, potato chips, Post-It notes, Slinkys, and penicillin.
Here are also a few video clips that provide great lessons about overcoming mistakes and failures as well.

Famous Failures (parents should preview first)
Lastly, quotes are also a great way to keep this concept at the forefront. Post these on the refrigerator, on the bathroom mirror, or in their bedroom. We have similar quotes posted all around our Red Mill halls.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Thomas Edison
"I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying." Michael Jordan

Battle of the Books Update
Red Mill's three 5th grade Battle of Books teams made us all proud last Tuesday night when they competed in the City Regional Battle of Books Competition at Kellam HS. Our three teams, from the homerooms of Ms. Fox, Mrs. Osborne, and Mr. Petermann, took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The top team from each City Region moves on to compete in the City Semifinals. We are so proud that the team from Ms. Fox will move on to compete on March 15th at the Central Library at 6:00 PM.

50 Million Strong
The 50 Million Strong campaign was initiated by health and PE teachers as a call to action for all health and physical educators to unite and focus on a common purpose. This initiative aligns to the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America campaign and its goal to ensure all American children be empowered to lead healthy and active life styles through effective health and physical education programs by the year 2029 http://50million.shapeamerica.org/about-us/.
All Virginia Beach City Public Schools students who are enrolled in health and physical education in grades 1-10 will implement a personal fitness plan on Friday, Apr. 28. The plan will be a culmination of a yearlong development by students that includes: student collection of data, goal setting, development of a plan of action, implementation of a plan and reflection.
This personalized learning experience will be an opportunity for students to develop self-knowledge and self-awareness of their strengths and weaknesses through an authentic task related to their personal fitness plans. This implementation of student fitness plans will occur in their health and physical education classes.
