Big picture

Hello September!

I hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day and long weekend! I hope everyone was able to have some fun and get some rest and relaxation! My family and I went camping and were able to enjoy the beautiful weather, go to the beach, have an epic water balloon fight, and spend time with family!

I am hopeful that we will be able to start welcoming some cooler weather this month. As a reminder, make sure you send a jacket with your kiddos as our morning recess can be kind of cool, while our afternoon ones can still be hot.

Looking forward to an amazing September together!

If you are already MVP trained and need to know if you need to renew or not, please contact Anne Kwon at annekwon@smsd.org. If you missed the first MVP Training at Nieman Elementary. You can attend any of the attached locations.

The Knight School

The Knight School is returning this fall to Nieman Elementary School! The Knight School Chess Team will be your school's official chess team and chess party.

This revolutionary, party-based approach to chess has had amazing success—winning multiple state championships—because our unique and unprecedented educational philosophy, “the chess party,” is the perfect way to transform a complete beginner into a devastating chess machine.

Our unique model has swept America because it has never been seen before: we simply invite every beginner in your school to join our school chess team and we use only super-fun teaching methods such as super-fast chess clock-slapping chess games, zany chess videos, a strict bully-free environment, silicone wristbands for tactics mastery, chess puzzlers for candy, driving music, hilarious tactics-lesson videos, and Mardi-Gras bead chess tournaments each day we practice.

In this kid-centered classroom environment, we teach our kids every cool trick, strategy, opening, and tactic in chessdom and our kids soon learn to love and master chess and to masterfully control their classrooms, sports fields, and home lives as well! Laughter, fast clocks, and compelling teaching approaches make this class the week's highlight for the current 3600 Chess Party members who make up the awesome network of The Knight School's 200+ school chess teams.

Join The Knight School chess party and give your child the gift of amazing chess friends, undeniable academic confidence, a self-identity as a smart kid, and a weekly dose of childhood joy that is the highlight of their week! Sign up today! Learn more and sign up for our school chess team at www.theknightschool.com or email Coach Brian Harris: brian@theknightschool.com (785) 341-6590. NIEMAN AND DISTRICT INFORMATION

Social Emotional Learning Video

This week our Social Worker, Ms. Kwon, started going into classrooms to co-teach Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons with the classroom teacher. In some of these rooms, we have worked on Conflict Resolution Time Machine through Conscious Discipline. This has been helpful for both staff and children on learning another way to assertively handle conflicts with each other through effective communication.

Here is a link for you to watch a video of the Founder of Conscious Discipline, Dr. Becky Bailey, modeling this: https://consciousdiscipline.com/videos/conflict-resolution-time-machine/

Trauma Smart Information:

The Nieman Staff has been learning about the prevalence of trauma, definition of trauma, and the physical and emotional impact trauma has on students. See the attached information to learn more about the agency's partnership with caregivers to build resiliency in our community as well as some of the information that we have been learning. You may start to hear some of this from your child!
