Our School's Why
We are Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th - October 15th)
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families, Caregivers, and Scholars,
We had an awesome start to a new school year and are moving forward with great momentum! During the month of August, we provided our scholars with uniforms, implemented our restorative circles during advisory, and began using Live School and e-Hallpass. All of these tools have proven effective as we are watching our culture positively change, creating a safer environment for ALL scholars who attend LWSH! We look forward to the continued use of these tools and our families getting involved by downloading the Live School app and logging in with the information that was sent home with your child.
As we move into September, we are shifting our focus to our initiatives in our Academic Achievement Plan (AAP) that includes Writing, Math Talks, and Profile of a Graduate Outcomes. For writing, we will be facilitating instruction that focuses on the use of daily writing and speaking grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational (with students having opportunities to practice writing in all three genres - narrative, argumentative, and informative). In math, we will be facilitating various math talks 1-2 times per week using problems that have multiple pathways or solutions and promote a variety of student outcomes. These outcomes may include building connections within the content, mathematical reasoning, evaluation of solutions, or modeling mathematical structures. As we engage our scholars in these learning opportunities, we will be connecting the following Profile of a Graduate outcomes under Academic Mindset and Critical-Thinking and Problem-Solving:
Academic Mindset (outcomes 3, 5.1, and 5.2)
- 3—I seek academic challenges to take risks to pursue learning
- 5.1—I accept and use feedback to revise my work to high quality
- 5.2—I seek out feedback to continue my own growth as a learner
Critical-Thinking and Problem-Solving (outcomes 2.1 and 3)
- 2.1—I analyze sources of evidence to help explain my response
- 3—I evaluate arguments for possible answers by assessing whether reasoning is valid, and evidence is relevant and sufficient
We are confident that our efforts in these areas will increase student achievement across grade levels. As we are doing that, we continue to ask for your support through discussing these specific outcomes with your scholar(s) and monitoring their progress by attending our Student-Led conferences. We look forward to our continued partnership in helping every LWSH scholar to transform themselves and their community!!! For more information, call the LWSH main office at 216-838-7100.
Sincerely,
Juliet King
Your Proud LWSH Principal
