Scholastic Summer Book Packs
On top of getting outside and enjoying the great outdoors, playing with friends and family we would love for our students to READ this summer as well as work on other activities to help with the summer slide. Summer slide is a term that references the dip students often experience in their academic ability after a summer break. We can't wait to see how your brains GROW after reading this summer. Mustang Proud!
Dear Parent or Caregiver,
My Books Summer has been designed to help your child maintain their reading skills over the summer break, a time when many students fall behind their grade levels. We hope that you will support your child’s daily reading, so we are sending home books for your child to read, enjoy, and keep for their home library.
There are many ways to help your child grow as a reader, but the most important is to help establish a routine of daily reading. You might want to help your child set up a time and place for this, establishing a consistent habit that will allow for concentration and immersion in the pleasures of reading. It’s also important to talk with your child about what he or she has read, ask questions, encourage discussions, and help with comprehension as needed. If your child is already an enthusiastic reader, elicit opinions and ideas that are sparked by their reading.
If your child is a reluctant reader, it may be helpful to read certain books together, or for you to read the book on your own and then sit down with your child to discuss it. If you retell your own favorite details, read aloud favorite passages, or ask your own questions about the book, it will set an example for your child to begin to develop their own abilities to analyze and evaluate texts. The Summer Reading Journal and Think Sheets will help your child with their summer reading goals—and will make it easy for you to support your child’s efforts.
We thank you for helping your child make a habit of daily reading and enjoying books. Summer reading is an important way to help your child transition to the next school year.
Sincerely,
McGuire Staff

PLEASE HELP OUR SCHOOL!
Hello Families,
Your child brought home a Parent Information Envelope letting you know about a safe and easy way for our school to raise funds for essential tools our students and teachers need to succeed.
The SchoolStore fundraiser is 100% online so there is NO face-to-face selling, handling money, or delivering products. Your participation will take less than 12 minutes, and there are exciting prizes to make it fun for the students.
Here is all you need to do to participate:
1. Go to https://www.schoolstore.net/cgi/SetSchool?SchoolID=0000363158&secheck=on
sign up.
School ID: 0000363158
2. Send form emails inviting family, friends and co-workers to support your child.
3. Return the Envelope with the Student Prize Code to school for your child to get their fun participation prize.
Be sure to ask your child for the Parent Envelope tonight. Your participation will make a difference for our school and teachers!
Thanks,
McGuire Elementary School
NO early drop off until 8:35am
If you drop off after 8:50, please be sure to come into the office to sign your student in for the day before leaving. If you drop off your student to come in without an adult, we will have to call you to come back and sign them in. Unless you sign your student in at the office, the tardy or absence will not be verified which could negatively impact the attendance record, leading to truancy. Thanks!
Please label your student's items
Use a permanent marker to label your child's name on lunchboxes, school supplies, backpacks, water bottles, child's clothes (utilize the inside tags of sweatshirts, jackets, shoes, and snowpants). We will periodically check labels and post pictures of items to be claimed - check out the McGuire Facebook page.
Send an extra pair of clothes to stay in your student's locker, place in a ziplock bag or plastic grocery bag, label with their name.
autism awareness & acceptance lessons with cmu
The lessons will occur monthly beginning this past week. They have been generously funded by the Organization for Autism Research. Lessons will include specific information regarding autism, including how to be aware of the needs of peers with autism, in addition to focusing on the acceptance of differences and similarities of all students.
In addition to the formal lessons, books about children with autism will be read to each class and these books will be donated to the school libraries at the end of the academic year for students to check out and share with family members and friends.
You may check out the following link for more details about the lessons: Kit for Kids | Organization for Autism Research (researchautism.org). If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact AnnMarie Bates at bates4al@cmich.edu or 989-774-5899.
