Principally Speaking...
Dear Families,
With the record-setting snowfall this month and last, it is hard to believe that spring is almost here! The inconsistency of the weather has produced inconsistent days of school with many interruptions. We appreciate your flexibility and patience as we dealt with school closures and delays.
Report cards for the second trimester will be sent home on Tuesday, March 26th. Just a reminder, there will be no school for students on March 27th- 29th in order for parent/teacher conferences to be held. There is a change in our conference schedule this spring. Evening conferences will be held for families on Thursday, March 28th. Please refer to the schedule that was sent home by your child’s teacher.
Thank you to all of our families for your contributions to the PTSA auction and our fund-an-item need! Enough money was raised to purchase emergency preparedness supplies for all our classrooms and to purchase a new laminator. If there is any money left over, we will use this to purchase some playground equipment. I cannot express enough our gratitude for your generosity and commitment to keep our students safe!
As we look ahead, there are a few events I would like to highlight:
- The district’s strategic planning process is in full swing, with many dedicated staff, students, and community members participating in defining our goals and values in the North Kitsap School District. Community forums will be held this week at 6:00 pm on March 13th at North Kitsap High School and on March 14th at Kingston High School. The planning team values your input. These forums are an instrumental part of this process.
- We look forward to the opportunity for some of our 4th and 5th graders to share their thoughts at a student forum that will be held at Vinland on March 15th.
Thank you for your partnership with us.
Warmly,
Bridgit Reichel, Principal
March Family Fun Night Cancelled
We regret that we had to cancel our March Family Fun Night Event – Bingo Night originally scheduled for March 15. We did not have enough volunteers to make this happen. We are hoping to reschedule it since there was such an overwhelming positive response last year, but we need help! Please consider your time and talents to help out so we can keep the fun going!
Come to Claim Your Lost Items
Parents, please plan on visiting our "Lost & Found" when you come in for your Parent-Teacher Conference. All items left behind at the end of our conference period (March 29) will be donated to Second Seasons.
Spring Book Fair is Near!
The Spring Scholastic Book fair is coming to the Library March 18-22 from 8:45am - 4:15pm! It’s a great way to stock up with new reading for Spring and Summer Break. All purchases benefit Vinland Elementary. And new this time, is an easier way to pay. Click here for more information, to sign up to volunteer, or load an “e-wallet.” If you have any questions or would like to help, please contact Jen Pust at jenniferpust@yahoo.com.
Vinland Yearbooks - On Sale Now!
Orders for yearbooks are still being accepted through March 27th! Pre-sales are $10 cash or check made payable to Vinland PTSA, and buying now is the only way to guarantee your copy. We cannot guarantee extras will be available at the end of the year. If you have questions, contact Kristin at vinlandyearbook@gmail.com. If you’re not sure if you purchased a yearbook, please check the list posted outside the PTSA office.
If you’ve been snapping pictures through the year, we would love it if you could share! We are looking for field trips, family fun nights, recess, lunchtime, art, classroom pictures, etc. Please send them to vinlandyearbook@gmail.com or post them to the Vinland PTSA Facebook page!

Being "Smart" on the Internet
Last Friday, the Poulsbo PTSA hosted a "Smart Talk" at the auditorium to help guide parents on how to teach their students responsibility with technology. If you missed it, you can still use their website to guide your discussion about technology with your students. There is a contract you can both sign at the end. I hope you find this helpful as you navigate how to best keep your student safe in this digital world. Visit: TheSmartTalk.org
Fins to the Finish
Our 8th Annual 5K Run/Walk will be here before you know it! Currently, the Art Contest is up and running through March 15. Flyers have gone home, or click here for more information. Any student can draw and be entered into the contest for the official design of signage and race t-shirts. The race will be Saturday, April 27 starting at 9am. Registration and t-shirt order forms will go home just after Spring Break and will be available on the PTSA website. If you have questions or want to volunteer, please contact Cristi Frank at 4Frankfam@gmail.com.
Attendance Hotline
If your child will be absent from school, please remember to call our Attendance Hotline at 360.396.3603 (instead of our main office number). This is a 24 hour message line. Please remember to call no later than 9:30am.
You will be asked to leave the following information on the attendance hotline voicemail: your student's name, the date of the absence, teacher name, and reason for the absence.
Also, as a reminder, it is district policy that your child must be vomit and fever free (without medication) for 24 hours before returning to school.

The LaPorte Report in Physical Education
This month brought a class (and teacher) favorite, basketball! The National Standards are all about dribbling, but, we get a little passing, shooting, and modified play in as well. Due to all the snow, our gymnastics unit was cut short but we got a little movement in across the mat and some very simple rolling. Next up will be some scooters, hockey, cooperation, and dance!
W.A.V.E.S. - We just finished up a great volleyball session and started basketball. The students had a great time in their Vinland Staff vs. Students volleyball game. It was as loud as a rock concert in the gym, with all kinds of positive cheering. Thank you for participating: Carter, Jack, Sarah, Andy, Tatianna, Gracee, Adriana, Abby, Malik, Deanna, Makayla, Brooklyn, Mayah, Brooke, Owen R, Owen L, Katie, Steven, Lizeth and Jackie. Not pictured: Emery, Aubrey, Aidan, Dawsyn, Sid, Josue, Racine, Ariana, Ethan U, Sidney and Nora. If you have a child participating in WAVES and want to check it out, email Ms. LaPorte at jlaporte@nkschools.org
Dolphin Laps - Well, our lap runners have slowed down this month. It could be all the snow on the field and so many missed school days. Hopefully as the weather improves more students will get back into it. Currently the school has completed 480 miles. First grade has turned in the most miles with 160 miles, and Noah just can't seem to be caught. I look forward to seeing more runners out there in the weeks to come.
