College Department Chair Visits Students through Google Meet
Global Connections through eLearning
Wilson High School students in Dr. Lucia Huang's German classes received a special treat during their eLearning session on Wednesday of this week.
Dr. Morgan Koerner (top left), Chair of the Department of German and Russian Studies at the College of Charleston, joined Dr. Huang’s MYP German 4 and IB German 5 classes through Google Meet.
In addition to showing a video of his students’ recent theatrical performance on Goethe’s Faust, Dr. Koerner also spoke about studying German in colleges, the benefit of learning German in the job market, and numerous study-abroad opportunities at the College of Charleston.
Dr. Koerner said, “I have long been impressed with the exemplary German program and the students there at Wilson High School and loved the chance to visit with the German students.
They are going to do great things!”
According to Dr. Lucia Huang, his visit gave the students a sense of hope over feeling isolated at home.
"The students understand that as soon as the Covid-19 crisis is over, the world is within their reach," added Dr. Huang.

Students Selected for All-State Event at Furman University
Four local middle school students have made the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) 2020 Honor All-State Chorus. Southside Middle School’s all-state chorus members are Trinitty Gade, 8th grade soprano; Jacob Gray, 7th grade tenor; Ryan Matney, 7th grade bass; and Tyler Russell, 8th grade bass.
Over 500 students auditioned for the All-State Chorus, and the four Southside students are among 254 statewide who made either the all treble voices (SSA) or SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) Chorus. The four Southside students were selected for the SATB choir.
In order to be selected, each of the students auditioned by having their voices recorded singing their part to Handel’s “Hallelujah Amen” with the accompaniment of the three other voice parts playing. Their recordings were then uploaded to the ACDA audition site.
The Middle School All-State Chorus event will be held at Furman University, October 16-17, 2020. Lynn Perkins is the choral music instructor at Southside Middle School.
