Nurses Corner - Important news and updates
Nurse Notes for Friday, January 31, 2020
During the month of January we have received several inquiries regarding the protocol for Return to School Following an Injury and for
Administration of Medication at School. Here are the answers.
Protocol for Injury
A note from the treating physician is required for any injury, at school or out of school, that needs medical intervention and follow-up. Some examples are fractures, sprains and concussions. This note should state the nature and date of the injury, the specific limitations required during the healing process and for how long, and the signature of the health care provider. This note/form should be given to the Main Office on the day that the student returns to school. The Health Office will then inform the classroom teacher, gym teacher and other staff who may have responsibility for the student during their school day.
Protocol for Medication at School
A signed physician’s order stating the name of the medication, dosage, time of and reason for administration and date the order expires.
Signed and dated parental permission for administration. There is often a line for this on the same Physician form.
Medication must be in the original pharmacy container with the official pharmacy label. This is also true for over-the-counter medication. It must be in the original pharmacy container.
Medication should not be sent in the student’s backpack. It should be delivered to the Main Office by the parent or other responsible adult.
If there are further questions please call the Health Office between 10:00-2:00, Monday - Friday.
