On the news... 2nd grade!
Heavilin 2nd graders have been studying the weather in science. One of the projects was to illustrate a beautiful weather picture which was then mailed in to Channel 7, ABC Morning News. So far three student's have had their art featured on TV - Weather Sketchers. Congratulations to Ashlyn Dybel, Scarlett Staab, and Addison Gordon. Soon, you can view their art on the ABC website too! The next students scheduled for the news are:
Gavin Wipert- Monday, Oct. 9th at 6:30 am
Paige Hughes- Tuesday, Oct. 10th at 5:30 am
Your future is KEY, so stay drug-free
Red Ribbon week is fast approaching. While we are looking forward to a fun week, we also hope you will take the time to talk more with your student about how great life can be without drugs. We do want to let you know about the activities for the week and the contests.
1. There will be Pledge Cards, donated by McDonalds, with a coupon for a free hamburger for those students who choose to sign the pledge and return their card. We hope to be able to display lots of the cards in the school.
2. We will also have a, Window Decorating Contest - Classrooms will be decorating their windows by 10/20/17. Judging will take place on Wednesday, 10/25/17 and the class, with their teacher, will get to choose a fun way to celebrate their win (another pajama day, hat day, or other theme of their choosing)
3. There will be a Spirit Week for Class Level Contest (by percentage) - We will do a daily theme for dress up. Teachers will do a count each morning and turn it in to be recorded. Spirit Day Weeks are listed below.
Spirit Week Days
Monday - Pajama Day
Tuesday - Red Day
Wednesday - Funky Hair/Hat Day
Thursday - Superhero/Hero Day
Friday - Green & White Day
4. We will also have an Art Contest - Mrs. Nix is coming up with grade level art projects to complete to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. The contest will be voluntary and by grade level. Submissions for the art contest will be due Monday 10/30. McDonald's has donated a Happy Meal coupon for each grade level winner.
We are really excited about a fun week but don't want to lose focus on why we are doing it! We hope having these fun activities will encourage a positive outlook on a drug free lifestyle. We are looking forward to a great week!

STEM News
Students are loving their visits to the STEM lab each week. Have you ever considered trying STEM activities at home? Kids love when they can have hands-on learning with simple supplies. Here are some fun fall ideas to try this month with your family!
Weigh and measure pumpkins and gourds. Record and analyze data.
Launch candy corn with homemade catapults made from household supplies.
Build structures with candy and toothpicks.
Collect, draw, and color leaves. Then, create a leaf journal.
Imagine you’re a spider and create a weight-bearing web using yarn, a coat hanger, and tape.
Have fun!

PTO Meeting
Meet Oliver, Our School Therapy Dog
Oliver stays in the principal's office during the school day, where he keeps his treats and toys. Students come to the office to see Oliver. He goes home with Dr. Stephens when he is not working. Oliver is available for all students. Often teachers allow Oliver to be a reward for students. Many students are on plans throughout the day that allow them to earn a visit with Oliver as well. No child is required to interact with him. He typically does not visit grade level classrooms in order to allow students with allergies or those who don't enjoy dogs to have a safe and friendly school environment.
You can follow Oliver on Instagram @1earup.
