Message From Principal Engdall
On Monday we welcome our first group of 3-year-olds to our campus community. You can bet you will hear/see some littles that might not think this is something they signed up for! Give those struggling parents a pat on the back and look of reassurance. We know they will be skipping in the gate within the month!
This week our children in 1st -8 th grade finished the first iReady diagnostic. However, the site is still locked until we have completed our makeup testing. Homework should begin later this week. Each teacher has provided you and our children with the iReady homework expectations and passwords. Should you have any questions regarding the requirements, please contact your child’s teacher. When our children use this platform, they experience much less test anxiety and truly feel ready for the diagnostics and the Arizona high stakes test (ASSA) in April. We thank you for your support.
Please join us on Wednesday evening for our first Site Council/PTA meeting. Site Council will begin at 5:30. I will be presenting our school safety plan. PTA begins at 6:00. Both meetings are held in the cafeteria. There will be childcare in the gym. Pizza is provided after the Site Council meeting.
Afterschool enrichment classes are in their final phase of planning. We will be sharing our offerings in the See Shaw Shine on August 28th. Classes are scheduled to begin the week of September 12th. There is a fun and varied line-up coming!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Laura Hildwein
I know the holidays seem very far away, but requests for holiday help need to be submitted by the end of September. I am including the letter from the Salvation Army that lists the criteria for being able to receive support. Please let me know if you are applying.
Holiday Resource for Families
2022 Salvation Army Christmas Angel Program
Dear Families,
Each year the Salvation Army's Christmas Angel program offers donated gifts to children who could use some extra love during the Winter holiday season. This program has helped serve many families and you are invited to take advantage of this opportunity. Eligibility requirements include: children 12 years old and under, the family meets income guidelines, and is on the AHCCCS or has a school district letter for participation.
To help as many families as possible, the Salvation Army has created an online process. To apply, families can click the link provided below to begin the application process. We urge families who are interested in this program to complete the application as soon as possible because the Phoenix Elementary School District code is only active through September 30, 2022. There are a limited number of applications and they will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.
To begin the application process:
1. Go to this website https://saangeltree.org/
2. Use the Phoenix Elementary School District code: GZW39H4CH
Phoenix Elementary School District #1 neither endorses nor sponsors the organization or activity represented in this material. The distribution or display of this material is provided as a community service.

Garden Update
Our first full week is in the books! It was great meeting some of the new first graders. They were so excited about garden class! I’m excited to have y’all in our program. Say goodbye to the ODE and hello to the field garden.
Our first garden curriculum block is on the controversial Bermuda grass. This is a pertinent study in all US regions, especially the Southwest. We have more Bermuda grass on campus than any other plant. It is an invasive species that most gardeners and landscapers detest. Still, it serves a purpose and has some perks-particularly it’s anatomy and adaptations. I’ve been indoctrinating our students to loathe their home lawns. If they come home protesting dad’s putting green, then you can blame me. Apologies ahead of time.
The 7th and 8th grades have been hard at work in the field garden. The rows are slowly transforming. Next week we will cover the beds with plastic and let them snooze for a few weeks. This will bring up the temperature and cook a lot of the unwanted seeds that are embedded in the soil. It will bring some healthy thermophilic microbes as well.
We will have a parent workday on October 1st , 2022, from 8AM until 12PM. Stay tuned for more on that. I will make sure we post the sign-up link to See Shaw Shine and the Facebook page.
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
See you at the PTA meeting on Wednesday!
Mr. Moench
P.S. The class winner of the bottle cap drive will be rewarded with an ice cream and popsicle party in the spring!
