Principal's Message
Hilton Families,
It’s hard to believe another year has passed. Over the last few weeks, it has become obvious that the students are ready for promotion to the next grade level. Their maturity, composure and emotional growth is clearly visibly. And their physical growth is matched by academic growth as well. I am proud to work in a community that values education to such a great extent. The end of the year is a time to reflect on our growth and accomplishments and we have much to be proud of at Hilton Elementary.
I want to thank the Hilton families and local community members for making Hilton a great place for students to learn and grow. The Hilton PTO and parent volunteers work year-round to enhance the educational experience for our students. Special Interest Day, FIRST Lego League, Jump Rope Club, Holiday Shop, LEGO Block party, Field Day, Cultural Enrichment,… the list goes on. We enjoy having you in our buildings, supporting our efforts and our students.
I'd also like to thank the Hilton Staff. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of educators working with our children. The teachers, LESA staff, paraprofessionals, Education Assistants, custodians and ancillary staff all make the academic and social-emotional growth of your children their first priority. Keeping them safe and teaching them to be safe creates an environment that enhances their learning experience. While educating children is our primary responsibility, there is so much more that makes a school a special place. The Hilton staff take the time and expend the energy to make Hilton a great place to learn, and I am proud to work with such a wonderful staff. Their dedication and support of Hilton students is remarkable.
Next year we will continue to support the ever important social emotional growth of our students through training with Conscious Discipline. There are many great resources parents can access on-line to learn more about the program. These researched based interventions can help parents as well as teachers, and it's all just a website away. Videos and other resources are available at consciousdiscipline.com
The Hilton staff received additional training with visible thinking strategies and Cultures of Thinking that will become more prevalent in classrooms next year. Teaching students how to think, rather than what to think, is a critical component of thinking routines and visible thinking.
One of the most important things your child can do this summer is to read! I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for students to read each and every day over the summer. They have made such great growth, and will need to retain those skills for a strong start to the next year. Study after study shows that early reading with children helps them learn to speak, interact, bond with parents and read early themselves, and reading with kids who already know how to read helps them feel close to caretakers, understand the world around them and be empathetic citizens of the world. The Brighton District Library has wonderful programs throughout the summer, and it is always a great place to go with your kids. See the flyer below for information on reading opportunities and events at the Brighton Library.
Have a safe and relaxing summer! It has been a terrific year and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!
Sincerely,
Jeff
