CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP - September 23-27, 2019
Mr. Hill's Missive
Hello First Program Community,
It was a busy and beautiful week, last week, starting at the soccer tournament that Mr. Tronsgard and FP hosted, and the great weather continued all week long, which made it possible for PE classes, labs and ASPs to take place outdoors.
Speaking of ASPs, there is a new class that has been offered that caters to girls developing their soccer skills and mindsets. It meets every Wednesday and is run by Mr. Baker. Please contact our Division Assistant, Ms. Im, if you require further information.
Last Monday, teachers were at school advancing their knowledge and skills about teaching to achieve understanding - Understanding by Design (UbD). Much of the day was led by UbD guru, Greg Curtis.
Grades PK, K, and 1 went on a field trip to the Bucheon Botanical Garden on Wednesday. That same day saw Grades 234 students Wearing What they Will to raise money for charity.
On Thursday, we had our annual Library Day hosted by Ms. Choo where FP celebrates literacy with our community. More details on that event, below.
First Program’s use of the MAP assessment tool has come to an end for Fall; we will be utilizing it again in the winter season. Please expect to receive results at the end of next week.
House last week focused on spirit and community: G4s began work on the CDS FP song; PKKs played team parachute games in the gym; and 123s played collaborative games outdoors.
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program

Drama with Ms. Stant
Grade 3 and 4 Drama students have been working very hard in rehearsals. They have not only been memorizing their lines and blocking, but they’re also developing their characterizations to ensure that their performance is top notch! The students seem to be enjoying the rehearsal process and are truly taking ownership of the entirety of the dramatic process.
When asked about how the play was going, Jenny stated that she likes when she can react to the other characters and has the opportunity to be dramatic. Sua said she likes how we are all working together to save Mr. Cool from the evil wizard and Jinwoo said that he has a big part with a lot of lines but really enjoys getting the chance to kidnap the princess.
Mark your calendars now for the morning of October 25th. This is surely going to be a dramatic affair! -Ms. Desiree Stant
Library Day by Ms. Choo
On Thursday, FP had its annual Library Day! Younger students "boogie woogied" in the library while reading The Animal Boogie with Ms. Fursova, and older students wrote down and hung their favorite words on a string, just like the main character in The Word Collector. All students played a game of library bingo and everyone came away with a prize. We also did the annual raffle and gave away 42 books and 3 gift certificates. The raffle raised over 790,000 KRW which will go toward supplies, prizes, and refreshments for future library events. At the end of the day, Mr. Baker returned to FP for his Library Day story time tradition and made us all laugh with his reading of Stephanie's Ponytail by the favorite children's author, Robert Munsch. It was great to see everyone come together to enjoy reading! Parents, if you’d like to give some feedback about Library Day, please feel free to fill out the Library Day Feedback Form.
9/21 Soccer Jamboree by Mr. Tronsgard
On Saturday September 21st, CDS hosted it’s annual PK-2 soccer jamboree. Almost 200 students from 6 different schools participated in the event. The weather threatened to rain, but ended up being perfect, as the students got to enjoy the whole day outside with good air quality and no sunburns. All but 4 of our PK, K, 1 and 2 students participated, and everyone found a great amount of success. A special thanks to the PTA for putting on a great concession stand, the High School volunteers for helping out and the students for working so hard and showing great sportsmanship. Our students looked fantastic their yellow uniforms and they improved quite a bit over the course of the day.
CDS has a few event coming up, as we travel to Chadwick on the 28th for a soccer jamboree (Grades 1-3), travel to KIS Seoul on October 12th for a cross country running event (PK-4) and back to Chadwick for another soccer event on October 19th (Grades 1-4).
Korean by Ms. Kim
Grade 1 students have been learning Korean letters for writing their picture diary in Korean. They learned what are Jaeum and Moeum, how can read those and where is right location of Jaeum, Moeum in a letter. This week, students successfully made Korean letters themselves. They loved to form a letter out of Korean alphabets. Sophie said, “I made my name. It’s 소피.”
