McKay High School Weekly Newsletter

Week(s) of March 20 -- 31

Message from the Administration Team

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit." -Aristotle-

We have arrived to Spring Break, this week students will be given the opportunity to reach another milestone in the school year. The above quote is a reminder of the importance of building healthy habits. This point in the school year can begin to feel like the final stretch, but this does not mean it is too late for students to improve and build on their habits.

At this point in the school year there are more than 30 students who have perfect attendance. Along with more than 300 students who are attending at a rate of 90% or better. These students and their families have placed an importance on their student being in class. We hope that you can take a moment during Spring Break to appreciate the successes that your student(s) has experienced this school year, as well as assess how their current habits are impacting their education. Is there still room for improvement? What academic habits need to be reinforced? The Admin Team believes that each student can experience success, we are here as a resource as well as a motivational force.

Thank you for continuing to read our newsletter and for the partnering that you do with our community school. Please continue to work for your student(s) and as questions or issues arise, feel assure that the staff at McKay are a resource to your families. Enjoy your Spring Break and take care.

Shout Outs (Academics, Athletics, Activities)

As we arrive to Spring Break many of our students will be remaining active. This past week our girls softball team returned to the diamond they were blessed with some good weather and were able to play their game. Our Girls Softball team battled David Douglas High School to a 17-17 tie.

Also this past week our Jazz Festival group took second at a local competition.

After placing first at an in state competition a few weeks back our ScotsApella is headed to Los Angeles this upcoming week to compete at a regional level. This group has been working hard all year to represent our community in a positive way.

Many of our students are taking part in the multitude of opportunities provided by our school, another example taking place this past week took place within our Business and Marketing student groups. Students will be working with MAPS Credit Union to redesign the partnership between the school and the financial institution. The goal will be to create something that serves the needs of our school community in a more effective way.

This past week our Culinary students catered a school board event welcoming our new school district Superintendent.

Finally, it is with great pleasure that we announce that Seth Matheny has won the OSAA District 3 Championship in Radio Commentary and will go to the OSAA State Championship at Western in late April. He joins Piper Martin and Izaak De Jesus in qualifying for State meaning our entire team has earned the right to attend and compete. This is no small accomplishment for a team that did not exist when this year began.

All of these are great examples of students taking advantage of school opportunities. We look forward to returning back from Spring Break to share what else we have going on here at McKay High School.
