The Study of Genetics
Genetics
What is the study of genetics and who and how did he discover genetics?
Branch of biology that studies heredity. Gregor Mendel, studied pea plants for his genetic trait discoveries.
Compare and Contrast
*Dominant-the allele that is more powerful. *Recessive - the allele that is masked or overpowered. *Heterozygous- 2 alleles of the trait that differ from each other. *Homozygous- 2 alleles of the trait are the same. *Genotype- gene combinations of an organism.*Phenotype- the way an organism looks or behaves.
Punnet Squares
Phenotype: AB blood 50 %, A blood 50% *Genotype: iAi 50%, iAiB 50%
Mutiple Alles
Multiple alleles is the presence of more that two alleles for a genetic trait. It is used to determine an inheritance pattern.
Sex Linked Traits
Characteristics: determined by genes on sex chromosomes. *Example: hemophilia.
Describe incomplete dominance and codominance and provide an example for both.
*Incomplete dominance - phenotype of heterozygous individuals is intermediate between those of the 2 homozygotes. * Codominance- phenotypes of both homozygotes produced in heterozygous individuals. Both alleles are expressed equally.
