“I can’t make any guarantees, but… I think he has what it takes.” My parents and I sat nervously to hear Mr. Tom Haynes’s advice. Mr. Haynes has made his rounds in show business. As a “recovering” professional actor, Mr. Haynes brings on the job expertise and real world training to his role as teacher, director, and counselor.
It was April 2009. My college decision was only a few weeks away. My entire future riding on my 18 year old shoulders. Should it be one of the top Musical Theater programs in the country, or a good, old-fashioned Ivy League University? They wanted to make sure I got it right.
La Salle is known for its top-notch athletic teams, and nationally recognized academics, but it’s the dynamic theater arts programs, and unparalleled education that I received from Mr. Haynes, Brother Michael McKenery, and Mrs. Elissa Cerros that changed the course of my life for the better.
Throughout my time at La Salle, I was able to build my acting skills in plays by Shakespeare, Moliére, Neil Simon, and John Guare. As a freshman, I was cast as Harold Hill in THE MUSIC MAN, the first of many shows I would do with Mr. Haynes. Through programs created by the La Salle Theater program, I made professional relationships with working Trinity Rep Actors and Brown/Trinity MFA students. I traveled internationally to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to perform Macbeth, “the Scottish play.” On top of all this, I played some Varsity Hockey, and took multiple AP classes, taking advantage of the balanced educational experience only an institution like La Salle can provide.
I can’t stress enough how none of this would have been possible without the guidance and support of the administrators and teachers at La Salle. La Salle gave me a foundation to build the life that I wanted. It gave me the confidence to pursue a non-conventional career, and to believe that with the right amount of guidance and hard work, no dream is too big.
I am currently living in New York city, performing in the Broadway Cast of WAITRESS the Musical every night, and building a video production/creative content company during the day. I’m always available to talk with students, and love to give back stage tours if you’re ever in New York.
