El Dorado Monday Memo
Week 8 October 7th, 2019
#ToroFamily
Here we are at the last week of the quarter. Friday is our end of the quarter Minimum Day with dismissal at 12:16. The bell schedule can be found here and Emily will put a hard copy in your box at some point this week. We will also be holding our first Learning Walk of the year this week...see below for more info. Last week was a day to honor and thank our school custodial staff. Due to Rick being gone last week, we decided to do it this week. Please make sure to seek out Rick, Aaron, and Mark and thank them for all they do for our school. If you have time/means to drop them a note or something that would be great as well.
Thank you all for all of your hard work, your planning, your reflection and your willingness to look at what we are doing and to evaluate everything to better serve our students. I know 100% of our amazing students and welcoming culture are due to all of you and your love and support of everyone who walks on our campus. Thank you for what you do!
Updates for the week...
Wednesday, 10/9 Learning Walks: We will be holding our first Learning Walk to collect our baseline data for the year. If you have not signed up yet to participate, please do so here. This helps us plan the groups for each period. When your prep starts, join us in the Wellness Center and we will give you the data collection sheets and a quick overview. We look forward to speaking with our students and having you all join us.
Wednesday 10/9: PLC/R.A.P. Meeting: [*Please note the change] We will FIRST be meeting in the Library for our RAP meeting starting at 1:15. Please bring a device. An agenda will be sent out on Tues. PLCs will then meet from 2-3 following our R.A.P. meeting time.
Friday, 10/11: Minimum Day: Dismissal will be at 12:16. We will be holding our PBIS Ice Cream Social during 7th period (see below) and then please join us for our staff Ice Cream Social in the staff lounge after dismissal (Thank you Sunshine Club!!!)
Saturday 10/19: EDMS Family Fun Walk: Come and join our 2nd annual Family Fun Walk. Last year we had an amazing turnout...lets make it even better this year. Complete your form and turn it into PFC.
By now you should have completed your Mandated Training. If you have not your name is going to appear on a list we will get. If your name appears on the list, you will be getting a sad emoji from me. If you get a sad emoji it means you still need to complete your training. Information can be found here. NO SAD EMOJIS!

How do our students use their notes to learn? As we plan for opportunities for our students to write to learn, this list of principles comes in handy as a vehicle to reflect on the purpose of Focused Note-Taking. In addition, it asks us to reflect on how we are coaching our students in the processing of notes.

October focuses on Respect. An “I-message” is a basic tool of respectful communication, a technique to express yourself when you are upset or angry that encourages discussion reduces conflict. When you use an I-Message, people are more willing to listen to you and respond to your requests without becoming defensive.
An I-Message: 1) begins with a statement of feelings, 2) is followed by a statement of what the problem is, and 3) ends with your reasons for feeling the way you do. It tells others how their behavior affects you, and it avoids using the word “you” at the beginning of a statement, which can put others on the defensive.
For instance, “I feel hurt when you don’t answer my phone calls or text messages because I feel like I am being avoided by you, and have done something to make you upset.” Have students practice creating their own I-messages.
