WBMS Friday Notes
August 30th
Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Increasing reading levels is one focus area on our Strategic Plan; specifically, we set a goal to have 95% of all students reading at or above grade level by the time they leave us in 8th grade. It was a five year goal, but I am proud to tell you we reached it in one year. Now our challenge is to maintain and build our students’ reading capacity because we know strong readers have significantly more educational achievement and options, and we want EVERY student to thrive academically at WBMS and beyond. Furthermore, we want them to be able to choose any educational pathway that matches their interests and passions. Again this year we have one Compass period dedicated to recreational reading each week, and all of our courses integrate research-based reading strategies. Our newly modeled media center is still filled with books and our media specialists has begun bringing books into the cafeteria once a week for easy student checkout. I see students carrying books around everywhere at WBMS, which makes my heart sing! If you are travelling during the long weekend, consider listening to an audiobook as a family or setting aside some family reading time. Please partner with us to keep the love of reading alive! We look forward to seeing our students again on Wednesday, September 4th.
