Holland Intermediate Weekly Update
August 28, 2023
Principal Message
Hi Holland Families,
It was great seeing so many familiar and new faces this week during Jump Start. Many of our 4th graders are making a return back to Holland after a one year hiatus. Monday is the final Jump Start day, then Tuesday is the first day of school. Students can be released from their cars at 7:15 am.
Please take a few minutes to review the handbook. Cell phones are not permitted for use once they enter the building. Hoods and hats are not permitted unless given permission. Students are not to bring in equipment for recess or cards (Pokemon) for trading. Thank you for respecting these long established guidelines.
Finally, students have 3 options each day for lunch. Menus are not sent out as practice in the past. Instead, you can access all information through this LINK on the district Food Service page.

A message from Mr. G...
I hope everyone is enjoying the final days of Summer break! I loved seeing so many familiar faces and new ones during our Jump Start days. If you follow the district newsletters or Facebook accounts you may have seen that the High School has received the district's first Facility Dog to provide new support to the building's students. I mention this because Holland Intermediate is being looked at as the next building to possibly house a Facility Dog, with that there is a lot of planning that goes into this. One thing to plan for is allergies, you will find a quick survey for us to identify any student with a dog allergy or fear of dogs. the only people who will see detailed information will be myself and Mr. Evans. We are very excited for this opportunity and we hope you are too!

Two more things I am very excited about is my partnership with PENTA who created lesson kits on several career pathways that I will be using during my class lessons. Second I am very excited to announce our continued partnership with the Springfield Area Prevention Coalition. This year we will be working together by turning our Kindness Club into the Share the Shine Club. The new club's goal is to have students work on developing positive life skills, building communication skills, and continuing the legacy of the Kindness Club by enacting projects throughout the school building. More information will be given to students in early September.

Birthday Guidelines
Birthdays are very important milestones in our children’s lives! They are special days that can be recognized both at home and at school. We are happy to celebrate these days with your child. Here are the ways we will recognize your child’s special day...
-We will read your child’s name on the morning announcements.
-We will give your child a special item (pencil or sticker) from the office.
-Classroom teachers will recognize students in their classroom on their special day. -We will also recognize all summer birthdays by announcing each child’s ½ birthday. (The date is 6 months from their birthdate.)
For the last several years, we have been working with more and more students with unique dietary needs and significant allergies. At this point, we have students with dietary restrictions in many classrooms. Many of these allergies are severe, some even life threatening. This creates a difficult situation when any food is sent into school from home. As a result….
-Food items should not be sent into school from home in recognition of a child’s birthday.
Please ask us here at school if you have any questions or concerns about these guidelines. We do not want to send items back home with your children, but we will do so in order to protect the health and safety of all of our students!
Because we are transitioning away from treats at school, we want to offer another way we can celebrate your child’s important day.Students can bring in non-food items to share with their classmates such as pencils, erasers, etc. We hope your family appreciates the measures we are taking to keep all of our children safe. We appreciate your support as we make this transition for the safety of our students.
Sincerely,
The Holland Intermediate Staff

Social Media Awareness and Concerns
This is my 5th year in our building and each year we have increasing issues come up with social media, and parents often ask for support/suggestions from the school. As a result, I spent some time this summer attending a Safe Schools Summit in Columbus and came away with a lot of resources to share with my counselor, staff, and parents. One my think that our students are too young to exposed to these things, but all of the current data would disagree. Moving forward, we will try to provide links and apps to be aware of for our children. The last link that I am providing is a direct line to the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Apps our students may be using:
Instagram, Google, YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok, Readit, Kik, Discord
Apps that may be hidden:
Keepsafe, Line, Whisper, Kik, Smart Hide Calculator
Breakfast and Lunch Fees
Springfield Local Schools meal charges are as follows:

This will be a fun way to connect with other Holland families and kick of the new school year with some fun.
We will host some food/ dessert trucks as well as have yard games and bounce house opportunities.
Bring a chair - we hope to see you there!
Dolly Parton Imagination Library
In an exciting move that promises to ignite the imaginations of young readers across the state, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library has made its heartwarming debut in Ohio. This beloved literacy program, founded by iconic country music legend Dolly Parton, has taken its mission of fostering a love for reading and learning to new heights as it extends its reach to communities throughout the Buckeye State.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is renowned for its innovative approach to early childhood literacy. Through this program, children from birth to age five receive free, high-quality books delivered right to their doorsteps. Now, families in Ohio have the chance to participate in this literary adventure, setting the stage for a brighter future for young learners.
"The Imagination Library is more than just books," said Dolly Parton, the visionary force behind the program. "It's a doorway to endless possibilities, a chance for children to dream, learn, and explore through the power of storytelling. I'm thrilled that the Imagination Library has found a home in Ohio, where families will embark on unforgettable literary adventures together."
